Obama and White Voters, Part 2

To continue with the theme of my previous item, Ben Smith posts an absolutely fascinating e-mail from a Republican consultant who recently tested a hard-hitting, anti-Obama ad before a bunch of upper-Midwestern swing voters. Here's what the consultant had to say:

Reagan Dems and Independents. Call them blue-collar plus. Slightly more Target than Walmart.

Yes, the spot worked. Yes, they believed the charges against Obama. Yes, they actually think he's too liberal, consorts with bad people and WON'T BE A GOOD PRESIDENT...but they STILL don't give a f***. They said right out, "He won't do anything better than McCain" but they're STILL voting for Obama.

The two most unreal moments of my professional life of watching focus groups:

54 year-old white male, voted Kerry '04, Bush '00, Dole '96, hunter, NASCAR fan...hard for Obama said: "I'm gonna hate him the minute I vote for him. He's gonna be a bad president. But I won't ever vote for another god-damn Republican. I want the government to take over all of Wall Street and bankers and the car companies and Wal-Mart run this county like we used to when Reagan was President."

The next was a woman, late 50s, Democrat but strongly pro-life. Loved B. and H. Clinton, loved Bush in 2000. "Well, I don't know much about this terrorist group Barack used to be in with that Weather guy but I'm sick of paying for health insurance at work and that's why I'm supporting Barack."

I felt like I was taking crazy pills.  I sat on the other side of the glass and realized...this really is the Apocalypse. The Seventh Seal is broken and its time for eight years of pure, delicious crazy....

In your head, you understand how this could be. But it's still remarkable to see it play out this way...

Wow, I mean, really... WOW!

That is breathtaking...

I think I'm feeling the tectonic plates shifting.

Republican consultants aren't very bright, are they?  This is what happens when your party is led by an historically unpopular president.

Is it really a surprise that someone so uninformed or unstable as to believe the McCain attack ads would be a nutjob in other areas as well?

Bwahaha!  After spending the entire eight years of the Bush administration in a "wtf?!?" haze, this truly is pure, delicious crazy!

FWright - right on.  Also, this is what happens when you have a spoiled-brat running for office thinking the Presidency is his entitlement.

When people are hurting, they think about their interests; when they are full and lounging about in front of their fireplaces like satiated anconda, they can indulge themselves.  They thought about their interests in '92; they indulged themselves in 2000; now, it's interest time.

It'd be great to have all the low-information voters go Democratic for a change. Let's see Republicans work overtime to correct their false assumptions for once instead of us. (Reagan ran the car companies? Must have missed that episode of 60 Minutes.)

I think we're doing less well than Nate projects and the governor (R) is still pumping out his $'s. But if they call us blue at 6P, it's over.

Speaking of Obama and white male voters, I'm sure I speak for all Stumpers and Plankton when I note that the white male voter we want Obama to win over more than any other is John McCain.

And when I say, "win over," I mean REALLY win over. During the debate, I want Obama to gaze directly into McCain's eyes, and catch McCain in mid-sentence: "My friends, Senator Obama doesn't understand. His plan would...would...oh my...Barack, I...I never noticed your eyes before...how they sparkle with energy...but seem to hide a deep sadness, a great need..." and Obama answers, "Oh John, how I've waited for this moment!" and they rise as one to flip over the round table before sinking to the floor in front of Schieffer in the Lip-Lock Seen 'Round The World.

I mean, sure, shit's been crazy lately. But not crazy enough, in my view. We need to really drive Sanity down, make it hit bottom, face into the sidewalk. We need to hold Sanity's head down under our boot while we snarl, "Had enough, punk?" Scrape it down to the rind, as Mr. Natural used to say.

This is just the Republican version of that "Decision-Makers" blog that came out four years ago.  People are stupid and irrational.

I just pray to God that the break to our side this year.

Yard, do you want the whole freakin country to go blind?

This posting is why I have been thinking that McCain has been an absolute idiot to play to the base. If he ran as a Conservative Democrat, talking real trash about the Republicans, he could have taken the middle, let the base decide to sit it out or reluctantly support him over Obama (my guess it they would have) and we would be having a race right now.

Yard,

Not what I was expecting.  I was thinking of something more along the lines of McCain's losing his patience while Barack droned on about his multi-tiered economic agenda, head popping, electricity going out, and Palin parachuting into Hofstra Arena (or wherever the hell it is), shiny-spandex suit and cape-clad.  Once again, though, you've truly beaten us the finish.

I guess Republicans have finally become stupider than the average Americans; this is only to be expected when intelligence and literacy is denigrated in favor of folksy, guy/gal-i-could-have-a-beer-with charm.

you know, epicciuto and blackton, I was just going to chastise y'all for helping the opposition; but it occurs to me that if Barack is saying all these very same things to their face and they haven't caught on, then there really is no point because they probably won't get it. Sad.

Yard,

You ever read Robert Coover's The Public Burning? Wish I had it handy so I could quote directly, but there's a scene in which, to quote the late D. F. Wallace, "Nixon buggers Eisenhower on-air."

Your imaginary Lip-Lock belongs to a certified, veritable literary tradition.

(Nicely done, by the way.)

Yes, this sounds bizarre but I know it's true.  Talked the carpenter working on my house today, and he quoted almost exactly the same line about "never voting for any god-damned Republican" again coming from his two twice-Bush, devoted Republican brothers-in-law.  And I've heard it myself when traveling.

Bush has destroyed (temporarily) the Republican party's hold on the American center.  It' be nice to be able to enjoy it while it lasts, but with the economy in the toilet (my banker friends in NY and London say there is STILL no movement in the credit markets, and consumer spending is sinking like a rock), I think Senator Obama will inherit a mess with which he can do very little.

People are feeling betrayed by Republicans that they thought were on their side.  The cognitive dissonance got turned up so loud they can't ignore it.  It's a real opportunity for the Democrats and I hope we don't blow it.  Despite the 'bitter' remarks, I don't think Obama condescends to these people or writes them off for sounding confused & inarticulate.
