One More Reason for GOP Despair

From today's WaPo poll write-up:

On taxes, an issue that often benefits Republicans and that McCain has worked aggressively to highlight, Obama holds a significant lead for the first time as voters gave the Democrat an 11-point edge on whom they trust to handle tax policy.

Nearly as many said they think McCain would raise their federal taxes as said so of Obama, an apparent repudiation of Republican efforts to portray Obama as a tax-and-spend liberal and one that follows an intense advertising barrage by Obama asserting that McCain would tax health-care benefits.

If Obama's advertising has already reversed McCain's advantage on a traditional GOP strong-suit like taxes, imagine what'll happen when he really starts spending money. After all, the expectation is that he raised in the neighborhood of $100 million last month, while McCain seems to have blown through a lot (if not most) of the $84 million he gets under the public financing system.

Update: This brings to mind a way Obama could further depress morale at McCain HQ: Announce a plan to recapitalize troubled banks using his own campaign funds. You can imagine the campaign statement: "Barack Obama today pledged $100 million of his own campaign money toward resolving the financial crisis, conditional on his opponent, John McCain, doing the same..."

Another advantage: Any time McCain accused him of playing dirty, Obama could blame it on McCain's refusal to go along with his joint recapitalization plan.

That's a bit outlandish, don't you think Noam? That's almost as bad as suspending your campaign to help negotiations on the Hill. Besides, Obama's far enough in front so that he doesn't need a "game changer." You don't try to steal third when you're up by five runs.

Hey, how much money does McCain actually have left? Remember that in summer 2007 he had a ridiculously high burn rate and was nearly broke. Has he really learned to budget all that well since then? Or was he spending quickly again, counting on the RNC to bail him out (which from the noises they're making lately looks like is out of the question)?

Really, how much money does McRunt have yet anyhow? Doesn't he have to report his spending figures?

Another thing, what is the deal with the early voting states? How much has been going on, is there any exit polling from there? etc.

Hey, hyperbole flows in a campaign season, right, Noam? Sorry, I'm not sold. It would just appear too patently panderish/beating up on McCain to me. But what do I know.

Heh. Sorry. I realized that after my second comment. I give you points for creativity regardless. See you at the Sixth and I event?

Speaking of how Obama might spend his money, has anyone else noticed that he has an entire satellite channel dedicated to him? The Obama Channel is #76 (or thereabouts) on the DishNetwork lineup. (I'd assume he's got one on DirecTV, too.) Now, that can't be all that expensive since there are salad-shooter channels as well, but it's still brilliant. From what I've seen, it's warmed-over bio stuff on him and Michelle.

I can see a new GOP attack line coming:  "If Barack Obama hadn't taken $100 million in contributions from Americans, we wouldn't be in this financial crisis now . . . "

I find the statistics about taxes encouraging, because I felt that the Republicans were only offering two things:  lower taxes and war -- which I think is historically a fatal combination.  Maybe the public has better vision than I was expecting.

rozenson & Noam --what's the "Sixth and I event"?  Might it be the Talkback posters get-together that jaunty/cookie and others have been lobbying for for years?

can you hear my teeth grinding? Jack, I can't make the confab on Thursday. Believe me, I tried to make it work but my vacation isn't until the week of 10/27. Oh well, life moves on without me. Rozy, Noam, lift a frosty one in my honor.

However, being a glass is half full guy, I have arranged a 10/30 dinner gathering of me, teppy, and I think Yard in Palo Alto.

I would have given both of jacobt's nuts - if he has any of course - to be there. I just flat out love this magazine and though I don't contribute as much as I used to, talk back is a real stress reducer for me. As I mentioned to another friend, I have been reading TNR and The Nation for over 25 years. But there is a difference: When I get my issue of The Nation, I usually breeze through the columns and check out any interesting reveiws in their hit or miss back section. This entire process takes me about 15 minutes. With TNR, I take my time, spread the pleasure over a few days, take it with me for my 30 minute pre work coffee at the dreaded Starbucks (I admit that too, I love Starbucks, I liked Blue Hawaii also, deduct 20 IQ points) and read the issue over a period of days.

For me, if The Nation is a quick, stinging shot of rye, TNR is like fine cognac, to be enjoyed and not rushed.

Cheerio and enjoy Thursday.
