Quote of the... Year?

Gail Collins:

Remember how we used to joke about John McCain looking like an old guy yelling at kids to get off his lawn? It’s only in retrospect that we can see that the keep-off-the-grass period was the McCain campaign’s golden era. Now, he’s beginning to act like one of those movie characters who steals the wrong ring and turns into a troll.

During that last debate, while he was wandering around the stage, you almost expected to hear him start muttering: “We wants it. We needs it. Must have the precious.”

McCain has entered his most desperate hour. If one considers John Judis's hero piece in the most recent print issue of TNR, McCain has to consider that his hero narrative might end in tragedy. The hero could be denied. Maybe he wants to conserve part of his iconic status in spite of a loss or in case of a narrow victory. Maybe that accounts for him taking the microphone from that lady who called Obama an Arab. We'll see. Up to this point, he has not draped himself in glory, and his campaign advisers seem determined to push negativity and slander. If he resists, that says one thing. If he does not, that says another. And if he publicly resists while Palin et al continue on with the bs, then that is the most telling bit of all.

Michael Crowley-

This quote might be worth quoting if the point (and the very same analogy) hadn't already been made (earlier this week) by The Daily Show's Jon Stewart.

Here's the youtube link to Jon Stewart's comparison of McCain to Gollum (at about 3:00 in):

It's worth noting that Stewart's analogy is infinitely more on target (and infinitely more hilarious) than that of Collins. Also, the JS piece appeared well before Collins' Friday column.

In the last week of the 1860 election; Stephen Douglas essentially conceded the election to Lincoln and went South to try to talk the idiots out of seceding.  History praises him for it.

ooh stan, tell it to McCrazy. That would be nice. That would be the golden era. But the idiots are hardly likely to listen to him - they love Palin, and think McCain isn't a real conservative.
