The Rape Card

I second the notion that it was no accident when, in the midst of a debate about oil drilling, Sarah Palin dredged up a Joe Biden quote about "raping our continental shelf."

I suspect that will be a major element of the post-debate conversation, and likely not to the benefit of the McCain-Palin team. Talk about jumping the shark. Talk about cynical.

Things are going well for both Palin and Biden: working Senator vs. upstart (I don't mean that in the snarky sense). It should play well to their respective audiences.  I give Palin a solid B or B+. I kind of like her (despite the fact that I can't stand her). She chops wood carries water and that's good for McCain, who can do barely either. I'm actually enjoying this. What's wrong?

And think of all the money we would make, having the continental shelf pay for the evidence kit.

Oh, hell, give her an A. She could hardly have done better. Brava, Sarah.

Talk about an absurd accusation.  This is no different than the conservaticves who went nuts over the "lipstick on a pig" line.

Palin was clearly trying to paint Biden as too extreme in his drilling position, figuring that most Americans don't consider offshore drilling "raping the continental shelf," or willing to be persuaded by her riff on newer/cleaner drilling tech.  But the idea that using that quote was at all immoral or some weird subtle innuendo is ridiculous.  It's the pig in lipstick affair all over again.
