I think there was indeed "a hint of that preachiness" in Michelle Obama's speech, namely,
the way she used "see" so often, it was worse than Rush Limbaugh's "see" tic. Introducing so many
items with "See" can be either confessional or patronizing, depending on whether it is
confessional, or, on the other hand, in fact preachy, handing down the truth and perhaps trying
to make it so clear that even you can see it (hence the right wing talk show use of it).
