Photo of the Day, Hagel Edition

That's Jack Reed behind Obama on the left and Chuck Hagel on the right at a presser in Amman. Now, congressional delegations overseas (otherwise known as CODELs) often, if not usually, feature pols from both sides of the aisle. Still, to see Hagel posed right behind Obama like that, as his left-hand man, is striking. The two elder senators' orientation reminds me of those ubiquitous pictures of McCain flanked by Lindsey Graham and Joe Lieberman.

Couldn't it be also fair to say that this was the Reed edition of the POTD?

I want to see Obama pick Hagel just because it would then goad McCain into picking Lieberman (which, I think, would be disastrous for the Republican ticket.

Mr. Lieberman didn't perform so well the last time he was on a national ticket, and I think Hagel would go after him hardcore in the vice presidential debate.

However, I don't really imagine that Senator Obama would bring a conservative Republican onto his ticket (too much risk).  But it is certainly fun to speculate, isn't it?

flynnb_az, we don't need to speculate. History offers us three examples of a president being elected after choosing a VP from outside their party. All three such presidents quickly died in office, leaving their successors to eviscerate their agendas -- and, in one case, to kill off the president's party entirely.

So not so much with the "yay, VP pick from outside the party!" Goes both ways; if McCain picked Joementum and won, and then died in office (a significantly likely event for a man of McCain's age in the next five years), I wouldn't actually want a non-Republican to fill out his term. Though if a President Joe could do for the GOP what President Fillmore did for the Whigs, then I guess I could get over my objections in principle.

I know he's very right wing and all, but damn it Hagel is really good looking.  I especially like his "disgusted at Bush" look.

He is very good looking, and I've only noticed it recently. You know who he looks like a bit? Joseph Cotten, only with straight hair. So, yeah - dreamboat. But not worth it if it means someone's going to shoot President Obama.
