I agree that this statement was unnecessary, and perhaps even unhelpful. That said, I'm glad Webb is not going to be Obama's pick. I'd much rather see Nunn or Bayh. I also like Gebhardt as a darkhorse - I think he would almost certainly bring Missouri.

I'm disappointed.

Jim Webb: Smarter than your average political journalist. Even Jim Webb realizes that Jim Webb isn't a good choice for VP.

(Which I say as an admirer, constituent, and practically neighbor of Jim Webb.)

Webb is OUT!  That's good news for women, Democrats and Obama (and maybe even people who still don't want to celebrate the Confederacy).  Now my vote for Obama is nearly assured as long as he DOESN'T pick Nunn.  That would be bad news for gays and lesbians.  Any other WATCH  is better than NUNN.  

Now that Webb has taken himself out of the running, here's a song in tribute to my other veep candidate to the tune of "I'm Bidin 'My Time" from "Girl Crazy" as sung by Barack Obama (posthumous apologies to Ira Gershwin).  You older folks might recall the tune.

Several months ago Webb had an interview with Olbermann and his answer to the question convinced me he'd have to be taken dragging and screaming to the ticket.  No bluffing or feigning, it was a "I'm really not the sort of person for that." (my words).

I think this "Hey, I'm not kidding." is because Virgina seems a little safer now and the sooner he kills the buzz in the state the they'll be letdown when he isn't the choice.

But I do believe it was his choice. Everything in his character conflicts with staying on the message of someone else. Barack didn't needed this public declaration, I don't think Webb even made himself available for any vetting.  Still, I don't think he would have screwed up and a few negatives would have been outweighed by a longer list of pluses. I can think of some safer choices but believe they'd be less good.  Too bad Webb wasn't interested, I hope it doesn't mean some sort of purity is the priority because I don't consider invisible to be a benefit.
