McCain's Lobbyists

Maybe, with the issue of lobbyists in the campaign festering, McCain had to address it head-on and get the pain over with, rather than suffer a drip-drip of stories over the coming weeks about which aide worked for which dubious government or corporation. But it sure seems like his campaign write large was not well-prepared for its new vetting edict. And the immediate effect has been to make the press spotlight a long list of lobbyists affiliated with McCain to whom no one was paying any attention before. (Had you heard of Susan Nelson, John Green, Carlos Bonilla or Christian Ferry?)

McCain aides retort that this is an "inside-th-Beltway game" that voters don't care about. But the media still has the power to construct meta-narratives that do influence voters, and this whole affair will allow the media to snipe at McCain's anti-Washington cred every time he tries to invoke it in the months to come. So it's a big winner for Obama. Which is good, because I'm not sure he's willing this Iran debate. The way he revised his assessment of Iran--he first called it a country that doesn't "pose a serious threat to us the way the Soviet Union posed a threat to us," then in a letter to McCain clarified, "Let me be absolutely clear. Iran is a grave threat"--suggests a certain note of defensiveness, and perhaps a recognition that people really do find Iran quite formidable and scary.

Obama's shaky position on Iran is one more reason why he shouldn't agree to these unmoderated debates McCain's been talking about. McCain will destroy him on this topic in a way Obama probably couldn't recover from.

Destroy him?  McCain is going to be forced to defend the idea that Iran is an existential threat to the United States. It's simply not a defensible position. Iran isn't the Soviet Union or even a real threat. Being a regional threat to US interests doesn't make something a "grave" danger.

I don't think that's a revision; those two statements are perfectly consistent with one another.  Iran is a serious threat, but not serious in the way that the Soviet Union was a serious threat during the Cold War.  That doesn't strike me as particularly controversial.  Obviously anyone who hates us and is pursuing nuclear weapons has to be considered a serious threat, and equally obviously, that threat pales in comparison to the Soviet Union, which had a nuclear arsenal capable of destroying us several times over.

Actually, this is exactly what a lot of voters care about. Are they really this out-of-touch?

Woo hoo! Just keep it honest, Crowley. I love it when you guys acknowledge the role you play in American life, but its even better when you respect the role and play it sincerely. Don't get all "Faux Noise" and ruin it.

McCain made quite a reputation for himself on - among other issues - taking on the culture of lobbying. This did gain traction in the inside-the-Beltway culture but also among a significant slice of the public. The left 527's could do a good service by repeatedly running ads counterposing the old McCain to the new Mccain for the edification of voters. That should be more than marginally effective.
