McCain's Brain Strikes Again!

Another day, another combative letter from McCain guru Mark Salter, this one challenging Newsweek's framing of the race. The man loves to write letters! The good news for McCain is that Salter is a skilled writer and interesting thinker, the sort of qualities that endear him to national reporters.

But I suspect this habit will backfire on him eventually. It seems dangerous for an aide to churn out so many attention-grabbing words on a regular basis (too quickly to be vigorously vetted). Some people in McCainLand seem to share that worry. One joked to me that after this episode he wanted to remove the "send" button from Salter's keyboard....

Silly Salter, everyone knows a Presidential campaign is conducted via sound bytes, youtube videos, and attack ads, not boring old letters.

Are McCain's people as old as he is?  Because I know computers can be confusing and intimidating sometimes, but I'm pretty sure they don't build them with Send keys on the keyboard.

This sounds like a dispatch from the Republic of Letters rather than from the Republic of Email. MIchael you are correct that the danger is great here. One major wrong move will probably render Salter defanged. Bring it on.

Maybe Salter needs a "Scan for Freudian Slips" key? Or did something get dropped during upload to the Newsweek site?

"The Senator has never said that Senator Obama shares Hamas' goals or values or proposed a relationship with Hamas different than the one he would propose.  On the contrary, he publicly acknowledged that he doesn't believe Senator Obama."

He almost had me going there for a minute, sounding intelligent and making seemingly good arguments; but this one gets me every time:

"Senator Obama himself and Democrats generally have taken out of context and distorted Senator McCain's statements on a post war military presence in Iraq..."

Perhaps he missed Obama's interview on Hardball? Chris brought up this very issue, and Obama did a great job of laying out the precise context and meaning of McCain's 100-years comment. Perhaps he also missed the PA stumps where Obama repeatedly gave less thorough, but still accurate representations of McCain's 100-years comment? What is so difficult to represent about a S. Korea style armistice? This horse was still-born, and they need to move on before they get themselves into trouble.

Then again, it may be too late, since they are continuing to allege "agism" over Obama's "bearings" comment. The last time I checked, "bearings" was not a euphemism for senility, or mental capacity.

Me thinks they dost project too much...
