Dept. of Absurdities, Paterson Edition

Wow. This David Paterson stuff is getting beyond parody. See this interview with New York 1 (via The Page):

In a one-on-one interview with political anchor Dominic Carter, David Paterson spoke candidly about his past, admitting to illegal drug use, but not since the late 70s.

Carter: Marijuana?

Paterson: Yes.

Carter: Cocaine?

Paterson: Yes.

Carter: You have used cocaine governor?

Paterson: I'd say I was about 22-23. I tried it a few times, yes.

What has Andrew Cuomo done to deserve such good fortune?

Interviewer:  So you say you were once a member of the SLA, Governor?

Paterson: Yes.

Interviewer:  As well as the IRA?

Paterson:  Yes.

Interviewer:  And a brief stint in Khrushchev's Politburo?

Pateron:  Yes.

Interview:  And COBRA?

Paterson:  That was a phase.  They had pretty sweet uniforms.

We can all stop commenting now; adaglas has already won Post of the Day.

But I like Patterson's approach, and I'm not so sure it's good for Cuomo (or any opponent). The man knows there is dirt on him. That dirt will eventually come out. So better to have the sequence be dirt comes out, then three years of effective leadership as governor, then run for election than for the sequence to be three years of effective leadership as governor, then run for reelection, then dirt comes out. This way, the key to his election hopes will be his effectiveness as governor, not his ability to prevent the dirt from coming out at an inopportune time.

As they say, you run for office with the skeletons you have in your closet, not the skeletons you might want or wish to have in your closet at a later date.

I love this interview - it helps dissipate the press bullying and waste of this issue.

Come on, how many of us former waste cases (do they still use that phrase?) are running the world now?  We're semi-sane stand up citizens for chrissakes, got a sense of humor and some seriously funky memories.  So sue us!

Patterson was thrown in to this, this document dump of his is bold - probaby saves time in the long run.  No one cares.

What Wandrey said. I think it's pretty smart of Paterson actually. Open up the doors wide now and throw out anything that might hurt you later. By the time actual elections are up, there will be no unfortunate secrets that could be outed, and what is there will be old hat. If he does a bad job, then these things will still be used effectively against him in a campaign, but if he does a good job, noone will care.

same as above, the adaglas post represents the real parody.

Assuming Patterson can survive being seen as a fool, I am sure this approach has its merits.

Last I checked, Barack Obama had confessed to the same stuff, and he's doing all right, so this is unlikely to cause New Yorkers any concern.  Nobody will care.

I hope that, at some point in my lifetime, honestly talking about youthful drug experimentation won't be considered making a fool of oneself.

Rhubarbs, some Planksters bring wisdom, others passion, others erudition.  I bring 80's pop culture.  It's a niche I'm comfortable in.

haha, adaglas. Palm has a new smart phone, the ad campaign for which shows a a strobelit dance floor with a Palm smart phone bearing the oversized text message, "It's 80s night, Jen. You won't even have to change!"

They did something like this on Jimmy Kimmel, where they went through every drug in rapid fire succession, and ended with "the morning after pill?" to which Paterson replied with the 22 or 23/a few times response,
