You were right about the NY connection, Mike. If there's anything that being 18 this election cycle that I couldn't appreciate at 14, it's how Godawful and conniving the media are -- The Stump and The Plank excepted.

So unfair to Hillary.  It's not like Spitzer called Obama or monster or anything.

It is totally unfair for a politician to be smeared by association with the crimes of party-members from her own state. Unless the politician is from Illinois.

He might as well give up.  If she won't do that stuff for Bill, she sure ain't gonna do it for Elliott.

Although at $5,500/hr...

Blagojevich isn’t stupid. He would have used some shaken down campaign contributions and thereby claimed this was a mere campaign expense and not prostitution.

And if Blagojevich was going to get a hooker, he would have never been as cheap as Spitzer. According NBC, the Emperor’s Club charged $1,000 to $5,500 per hour depending on the girl’s rating. Spitzer spent $4,300 for two-and-a-half hours. That works out to $1,720 an hour. Blagojevich would have easily spent $12,500. Look at his hair: Nothing but the best, Clark.

But, in all seriousness, I must say, I am sick of politicians parading their wives in front of them after they get caught screwing hookers (Spitzer, Vitter), men (McGreevey, sorta Craig), or interns (Clinton). Guys, you betrayed your wives on a national, if not world, stage. Stand there and take your humiliation on your own; don’t use your wife as a shield. To me, that was the most disgusting part of this episode.

Actually Blago and Spitzer share some similarities: both were more impressive pre-governor than post, both started their Guv administrations with ethics bills, both from the get-go seemed purposefully aloof and condescending towards their state-capital brethren, and soon enough both were plagued by ethics scandals.  The Chicago Tribune did a Sunday Magazine article suggesting that Blago might have a psychological screw loose, and one wonders if Spitzer wasn't acting out some self-destructive tendancy by, it seems, transfering money without any attempt to cover his tracks.

When a McCain or Giuliani affiliated public servant was caught with his pants down a few months ago, the headlines were connected to the guy running for president.  It's only fair for the headlines to be about "Hillary's friend," "Hillary endorser," or "Hillary's Governor."  In fact, she's lucky that he's famous in his own right, or else the media would be focusing on their connection a whole lot more.

adavaught, I had the same thought about the poor guy's wife. He is such an asshole for making her stand up next to him. The least he could do for her now is not make her humilaition so public.

I always assumed the wives chose to stand by their men - that nobody made them do it. Nobody could make me do it, that's for sure.

While it must be true that, ultimately, wives themselves choose to stand by their husbands in the wake of such tremendous scandals, I think it is safe to assume that they are pressured, or at least talked, into doing so by their cheating husbands who believe that trumpeting their spouses before the public eye will mitigate some of the humiliation. And I agree that that is such a selfish course of action - all these bastards really ought to weather the storm alone and spare their already mistreated marital partners any further disgrace. If only more wives reacted by phoning nastiest divorce lawyers in the state, perhaps we would be spared from witnessing such degrading behaviors from our elected officials in the future. Here is hoping...

As far as Hillary-Spitzer connection goes, I believe it is rather safe to assume that she was in no way connected with his prostitution ring. Why use the incident to blacken her then? Just because politicians connected with Spitzer-like walking embarassments are regularly hounded for keeping company with those of whose perversion they likely were not appraised does not make it right, whether it is Hillary or anyone else.
