The Plagiarism Charge Parsed

Mike, I agree. It seems like a stretch unless they're after something bigger. Your read sounds plausible to me. An alternative theory is that, by drawing Obama into a back-and-forth about who's the bigger plagiarist, Hillary scores a strategic victory even if this particular battle ends in a draw. That is, she drags Obama into the muck of ordinary, mud-slinging politics even if she hasn't proven he's done anything egregious.

The larger problem is that by attacking Obama on plagiarism there's bound to be tons of people who remember the plagiarim issues that plague Dr. MLK's memory, and the Clintons have done way enough MLK-related damage in this campaign, so I am surprised that they still insist trampling in that potentially racist and divisive quagmire.

I posted this on Jason's Plank entry but I'll repeat it here.  I wonder if the Clinton campaign is trying to send a warning shot to Joe Biden so he doesn't make a noisy endorsement of Obama this week.  You know, get reporters talking about plagiarism so the guy for whom it's a real liability (remember the Neil Kinnock charges?) would stay out of the limelight.

Ah, and Joe Biden's star was dimmed because of this kind of BS? What a shame. How much better this campaign would be if Biden were the prospective nominee now.

Apologies if this point has been made elsewhere, but I have my own theory:

I think the Clintons are using this absurd "plagiarism" charge as a way of continuing their project of portraying Obama as "the black candidate." The real mission, it seems to me, is to draw a tighter connection between Patrick and Obama, and give their friendship (and their barrier-shattering political careers) a vague odor of corruption.
