Murdoch Weighs In

Via Ben Smith, I see that The New York Post, and, by extension, Rupert Murdoch, has just announced its support for Obama.

Ben's insta-reaction is "whoa." And I defer to him on this stuff. He's spilled a lot of ink on the rapprochement between Murdoch and the Clintons over the years. (Some of which wound up on our pages.)

Whoa? Pshaw. Murdoch has a nose for the way the market's moving. He follows, not leads, that market. He was leaning toward Hillary not too long ago.

TNR TalkBackers' inclinations are prob'y a better leading indicator of Dem politics than anything I've seen re this election.

Tep, apparently we're not such a good indicator, either, since Hillary keeps winning primaries. ;-)

Anyway, makes me wonder: Have Murdoch and his ilk stockpiled any new Whitewaters to dump on us in, say, September, or even worse, after a potential Hillary win? I mean, when Republicans take back the House of Representatives in 2010, would we be looking at a legislatively appointed special prosecutor to look into, say, the cash-for-pardons thing, or the Burkle payments, or whatever technically legal Clinton shady dealing we haven't heard about? The Post endorsement seems to carry at least the implicit threat of such.

I would just like to point out a Murdoch endorsement preceded Tony Blair's victory.  The man is evil, but he does have a habit of  betting on winners.

Murdoch knows the popular media inside and out. He's a tabloid publisher. He saw the value in  MySpace and bought it for a song when Larry & Sergei scoffed that they could build it on their own (and bid even less), and then milked L&S for an ad revenue guarantee equal to *twice* what he paid.

Obviously, the man has his finger on the public pulse. Call it "evil" if you like. I call it clueful.

Well, I guess I mean to see he's a lagging indicator but a damned good one.

Murdock at the New York Post. Zuckerman at the New York Daily News. the Sulzbergers at The Times. What's His Name at New York's Sun. Have money, buy press.

I say whoa too.  The Post's fawning HRC coverage (for a once-proud, now creepy-con birdcage liner) was hard to believe at first too.  Then I got used to it.  I guess Tep's right.  Question is:  Do we *want* Murodch's Post's endorsement.

It wasn't an Obama endorsement, just an anti-Hillary one.

OK, it's called the Post for The Clintons, Fox News against them.  This is Mr. Murdoch's political hedge fund.

DUMB ME.  I misread.  thought the Post had come out for her.  The Obama play is even more interesting.  But, I stand by Fox News not being for either of them.
