Quote of the Day

"We treat these problems as if one is guacamole and one is chips, when ... they both go together."

--Hillary Clinton, in a heavily Latino Las Vegas-area neighborhood, January 10.

Relatedly, today's WSJ has a look at Clinton's efforts to court Latino voters. No mention of the Do the Right Thing factor, though.

P.S. One politically-wired Stump correspondent in California writes in to say that Latino animus toward Obama is overstated:

Latino voters in CA are typically a lot more disengaged than most voters early in the process, and so their putative support for Hillary is even more a function of name ID – not some complicated racial politics.... At the end of the day, Latinos move mostly in line with the rest of the Dem electorate in CA (that’s the historic pattern), and even if by some chance Hillary wins them 3/2 or 5/3, that’s only worth a couple of points at best across the whole election.

Wheeee!!  What a great way to reach out to people -- appetizer allegories.

Which would make Iraq the blooming onion, gay marriage the hot wings, and Mitt Romney the seven-layer dip.

As a CA Latino, I struggle with this alleged bigotry on the part of Latinos towards AA. One part of me wants to say 'says who?" and show me the proof. But, to be honest, knowing what I know, I sense that some of this may be true. Sad, but true.

Still, I do agee with the fellow CA observer and that here in CA, Latino voters love Bill Clinton and this could be the basis for any loyalty towards HC. not an anti Obama context. That said, my guess is that given the choice, HC or Obama, older Latinos - like my parents for example - will go for HC over Obama.

Funny you should mention that meeting.  When I offered Senator Clinton some tortilla chips with guacamole, she politely refused.  Perhaps salsa would have gone better?

And the other really droll thing Hillary does, when she's speaking in front of a black audience, especially at a church, she puts on her "black" voice.  You know that lilt she learned watching Gone With the Wind.

This voice thing really helps her bond with people because it puts them so at ease.

I hope you and the folks here at TNR watch Bill Maher's Real Time, the HBO show that has proven itself to be one of the most on point topical shows of the day, and this evening was no exception.

Bill started with his monologue that mercilessly went after Hillary crying, then went on to question the validity of the New Hampshire primary, and its voting machines.  He also said that the Republicans don't want to run against Barack Obama, and that their preferred opponent of choice is Hillary Clinton.

God I love that guy, he's one of the few people who tell it like it is.

When the panel touched on the Iraq war, Bill mentioned how the US government is paying people, insurgents and insurgent leaders, to be our allies.  Fighters who five months ago were killing American troops, are now getting a US government check, as well as money from Saudi Arabia, to be our friends.

This tactic has been one of the basic tenets of colonialism in Africa and the Middle East since time immemorial.  Those who are working with us now will quickly turn upon us once the money runs out, or it's no longer in their best interests to take our money.

The Bush administration only adopted the current military tactics, tactics which we should've been using since 2003, because of the pressure the Republicans were going to face in this election.  They realize that they would have no chance of winning if they are ran on continuing a losing war.  So now we pay our enemies not to attack us, it's a lot like paying off terrorists to leave you alone, once you start down that road there is no end to it.

It's funny how all I hear is BS coming from the right and left these days, and that Bill Maher is one of the few voices the tells the truth, since he is apparently unaffected by the ultra partisan, toe the line drivel almost everyone else seems to be quietly pushing during this election season.

Clinton has now transformed herself into a populist overnight, after her little fear mongering tactics turned out to be such a dismal failure, now she's proposing an economic plan which is little more than a payoff to the American people, much the same as George W. Bush's tax rebate some years ago.  Vote for me and I'll put money in your pocket. The kind of thing that if you did it overtly would get you arrested.  What a despicable tactic, that the establishment is behind all the way.  Hardly better than the worms who constitute the front runners of the completely bought and paid for Republican Party.

We keep going in this direction and soon it won't matter who you vote for, because everyone is working for the machine, it run us now, we don't run it anymore.

As I look at all these things happening in my country, I'm reminded of a line from Forrest Whitaker's depiction of the paranoid dictator Idi Amin Dada, in the movie The Last King of Scotland.

"I am surrounded by traitors!"

The only difference is, I'm not paranoid.
