Mike raises a great question: Would Hillary have been better off skipping Iowa and making her stand in

Edwards is now in the role of kingmaker.  If he stays in the race, he's essentially supporting Hillary Clinton.  If Edwards drops out, he can give the nomination to Barack Obama.

One thing Edwards could do would be to stop campaigning, shut down his offices, etc but still stay in the race.  Use the millions of dollars on hand to blast Hillary with negative ads in Iowa, NH, Nevada.  Edwards' negatives go up, but so do Hillary's.  Then drop out of the race before Iowa without endorsing anybody.  Obama would clean up.
