In Which I Say Something Nice About Bill

Bill Clinton gave a terrific speech. And it was the kind of terrific speech that Barack Obama wanted and needed. If Obama loses no one would be able to say "blame it on Clinton."

The fact is also that, after a hesitant beginning, John Kerry also gave a wonderful speech, and it was wonderful not only in rhetoric but in substance and content. Now, I would quibble with him -- no, I would quarrel with him -- about some of his formulations on foreign policy. But no one will be able to say that his speech was like most of the rest of them. And he delivered it well, too. I don't recall a speech of his as good as this one in 2004.

The fact that even Marty is impressed says just how much Bill nailed it.

And I agree about the Kerry speech.  I didn't think he had it in him to deliver a speech like that.  In fact, I sort of mentally shuddered when I heard he'd be speaking during prime time, but he really came through.  Would have been nice to see some of that intensity and assertiveness 4 years ago.

it is heartening to see that reality can penetrate the [almost always] locked peretzian nimbus....

to be honest, I was wondering what you would say this morning, about Bill and John, two top drawer occupants in your Hall of Obsessions. This post was a pleasant surprise.

Finally, It looks like the Clintons have gotten their heads straight and priorities in order, and done the right thing coming through for the Democratic Party and the best interests of the nation.

And Marty, Barack Obama will win, there are no ifs ands or buts about it. No Republican smear machine or dirty tricks, or terrorist attack, or election fraud, nothing will stop Barack and the American people from taking back our country.

On November 4, 2008 we the people of the United States are going to speak with one voice, and we are going to be heard around the world, and after that there will be no doubt, no doubt whatsoever as to who still reigns sovereign in this nation, WE THE PEOPLE.

Aaron, give me McCain and 5 for lots of money.  Barack may win, but he hasn't quite sewed it up yet.  Maybe after tonight's extravaganza we will all, GOPers and Dems, just anoint him and forego that messy elections stuff.

"Taking back our country."  My, but you do go on.

butchie,

As big a BO fan as I am, I will not feel comfortable until I see 270+ electoral votes on election day. Right now, if BO is ahead by margins like 2 or 3 points in key states at election time, then the Bradley effect could conceivably turn  those into McCain states.

However, if BO opens it up and stays comfortably ahead leading up to the first debate, then The Mummy may be doomed...

Marty Peretz has been reading Judge Henry Fielding's Tom Jones.

Is he associating the fictional foundling with Obama?

Actually, after watching Bill Clinton's speech I was disappointed.  This was not of his best speeches.

Kerry was as fake as usual. Biden was better than  Clinton and Kerry but not much.

Mr. Peretz linked the Clintons to fascism one day, then to psychiatric disorders the next, now he says something nice about them. From Stalin to Brezhnev to Gorbachev in three days. I am sure that Putin is soon to come.
