Fantastic Dubai

There are plenty of travel books and lusciously illustrated magazine articles about Dubai (and the other wonderful Emirates). But I can't find a reliable social and economic survey of the money-sotted and tiny principality. We all know the basics. And this important basic, in particular: about 80% of the inhabitants are foreigners, not foreign immigrants. Guest workers, and I suppose guest workers should do as they are told.

Well, these workers have very few rights, and the right to strike is not one of them. Still, as the FT reports this morning, 250 taxi drivers went on a five-hour work stoppage. Oh, yes: they were promptly deported. We know of other official debaucheries in the string of emirates; this is not an exception.

I know that the fashionable human rights supporters are deep into the Dalai Lhama's historical freedoms to be a clerical despot, and at the moment it is very chic to have China as a target. I do not disagree with this posture, though Tibetan Buddhism is, after all, a despotism.

Still, a new, if altogether artificial culture is developing in Araby. It is being supported by western industry and western finance, and its glories are dispatched to the western public by western journalists and western tourists. But what about the exported workers of Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt, Yemen, Bangladesh?

Are there any Palestinian workers in Dubai? Are you mad?

There are, actually, and they form the Arab professional class in the Emirates.  Given that there are three million Palestinians and 300 million Pakistanis and Bangladeshis, there is a slight difference between them in terms of representation, but yes, there are Palestinian "workers", mostly educated, and I am not mad, only well-informed and not prejudiced.

"Tibetan Buddhism is, after all, a despotism." yeesh, where does that come from. I have little doubt that if Tibet had remained free they would have an elected parliment with a Prime Minister with the Dalai Lhama as titular head of state. Beyond that, how can you claim a religion is a despotism? Might as well claim Roman Catholicism is a despotism as well.

Also, having lived abroad for many years I recognize I am a guest in the countries I have lived. I am not saying I should have no rights, just that I shouldn't expect to violate my work visa and expect to remain. The cabbies chose to strike and they chose wrong. It is sad but not unexpected. But You can take comfort in the fact that in 50 years when the oil runs out there will be no foreign workers in Dubai.

Don't forget the Russian/FSU mafiya connection to Dubai. Per our spooks, Dubai is mafiya central, the Old World's version of 1950s Vegas. Only this version's Bugsy Siegels are in cahoots with AQ Khan and his ilk. Nuke technology transfer, not loan sharking.

He is not prejudiced, he says, except when it comes to Jews.

As for his not being mad, maybe, maybe not; but he has been flying a little too close to the sun….

Amazing! According to jacksondyer just speaking positively about Palestinians makes somene anti-Jewish! Perhaps he thinks that Jews have a monopoly on intelligence, so claiming anyone else as intelligent makes one anti-Jewish?

Dubai is not a rising superpower, doesn't have billions of residents and isn't hosting the Olympics.  What a silly attack.

Dubai is a speculative investor's wet-dream. Thousands of luxury condos, homes, office parks, etc. that are invested in, flipped for profit to other investors and then sit empty. Developments like the The Palm and The World may be selling like hotcakes but they sit empty. It's not as if Dubai is a sustainable place to live. Everything is imported, nothing is produced and all it's service employees are second-class, marginalized visitors. The built-in 'kick back' to the Sheikh's family owned development companies and kingdom coffers just for the privilege of doing business there. Dubai is very much a modern representation of Fritz Lang's Metropolis only without the Gothic underpinnings.

Given that this is ksarant's first post, I would guess that it icarus in disguise speaking.

"Perhaps he thinks that Jews have a monopoly on intelligence, so claiming anyone else as intelligent makes one anti-Jewish?"

And this , of course, is not an antisemitic comment.

Is ksarant the infamoous "Kostas Sarantidis" aka Icarus?

Blackton and Tep, Jackson defended you; I'd say you were slimed.

Jackson: getting into any sort of discussion with you is like wrestling the pig from Deadwood.  And considering that your only mode of discourse is the four letter word, the ethnic slur, and the anti-Semitic attack, there is no point in even responding to you.

But ... I'm part Jewish; I have relatives in Tel Aviv; I have nothing but contempt for Palestinian leadership and terrorism (which trained Iranian terrorists in the 70s and helped established the reign of terror in Iran between 79-82); and have been a vocal opponent of Islamic radicalism since before the Iranian revolution, from which I fled (for the same reason) twenty-five years ago.

The difference between you and me is not that you are philo and I am anti Semite.  It is that you are a heartless, prejudiced, racist and violent old coot, and I am a Mensch.

Tep: not just Russian, but Chinese gangs as well.  Most of the apartments in the Dubai tower are being sold to the Chinese rich, who are taking their money there and who prefer to holiday there than in more egalitarian climes. (More chance to flaunt wealth and indentured servants.)  An awful place however one looks at it.

These are only a few of the self praise posts that icarus likes to throw around.

Yes we know you think you are wonderful, but very few Jews here agree with you.

Of course we are all "slimy racist pigs" in you "partly Jewish" eyes.

Which part of you is Jewish, icarus? Certainly not your head.

btw: I am not a "philo-semite" (quaint 19th century term, I am a Jew, and not part Jew neither, whatever that means.)

I am also not interested in discussing anything with a slimy Jew hating bastard, I will however go after your posts anytime you start calling people, who criticize Palestinian Arabs, racists. You are just trying to be a sophisticated apologist for antisemitism.

"And I am not Greek, though have distant Greek (and Turkic) origins."

Now he is part Greek and Turk too. Wonder which part that would be. The man is part everything.  So he can be Kostas Sarantidis after all.

With icarus it’s ksarant  serant!

There is no truth in an anything he posts.

Coming back to medan's question. People are not antisemites of philosemites. This is an essentialist position. Rather people take antisemitic positions on issues dealing with Jews.

This is why someone can be Jewish or part-Jewish and still hold antisemitic positions as icarus does often when writing about Israel or people who support the Jewish State.

Another example of icarus self regard:

icarusr said:"... Given that there are three million Palestinians and 300 million Pakistanis and Bangladeshis, there is a slight difference between them in terms of representation, but yes, there are Palestinian "workers", mostly educated, and I am not mad, only well-informed and not prejudiced."

Of course he offers no proof, just an assertion of being "self informed."

But then icarus is probably  "part Palestinian" too and those of us who doubt his veracity are just "racists."

I had written

"Of course he (icarus) offers no proof, just an assertion of being "self informed.""

It should have read "well informed," though on second thought "self informed" fits icarus pretense to knowingness much better.

In any case, I doubt he will reply, he is a coward who runs away when someone turns the mirror back on his him.
