An Apology

I did Andrew Cuomo an injustice earlier today by accepting as true an allegation that the New York attorney-general was alluding to Barack Obama when he used the phrase "shuck and jive" as representative of what you can't do in the intimate campaigns of New Hampshire and Iowa. After realizing my mistake, I spoke with Cuomo on the phone and we agreed that the phrase was unfortunate, more than unfortunate. But, in the absence of very clear evidence, why did I so easily accept that he was applying it to Obama when he was not? That's my sloppiness, and worse than sloppiness.

What's more I took the occasion to slam political families as though they did nothing but try to transfer votes from one generation to the next. This was unfair to the Cuomos. First to Mario, who was a magnificent governor and would have made a magnificent Supreme Court justice. Second to Andrew, who was an excellent HUD secretary and is now using his authority as attorney general to unearth and undo what the malefactors of insurance and banking wealth did to the credit system in America.

Sorry, Andrew.

And sorry, readers.

Classy apology, Marty.

This is one reason I respect your work and opinions even when I don't agree with them.

Shouldn't Marty also apologise to the Clintons?

The appology is appropriate, of course.  But let's not go too far.  "Magnificent" Governors don't leave their States with such awful governance.  The problems Spitzer's trying to solve didn't start with Pataki.

Does that mean they started with Cuomo? Even if they didn't start with Pataki, it doesn't sound like he managed to solve them. Maybe they pre-date Cuomo as well?

The title of that post was "Hillary's New Low" so I agree, there should be an apology to Hillary too.  But 1/2 a good deed is better than none.

I am sorry, but you were right the first time (not about mocking political families, although I am not bothered by that it is still decent to apologize to Cuomo), but I think Cuomo's use of the words shuck and jive are more than unfortunate, they were flat out wrong and should not be in any conversation that has anything to do with black candidates (apart from Jesse or Al Sharpton, in which case I guarantee Cuomo would never have uttered those words), even if the phrase is not directed at them. If he were talking about Hillary and Edwards would he have used that term, or would he have said candidates can't dodge questions in NH? Was this a Freudian slip on his part? To me it almost evidently is, or Andrew Cuomo is far less articulate and intelligent than I would have thought he was. Yes, I know I might be politically correct, but was he wrong or he is just ignorant of the import of the words shuck and jive? In neither case do you owe him an apology to point this out.

Good on Marty.

Wonder whether any of Hillary's people have ever apologized, or ever will apologize, for their slurs of BHO.

Marty, I agree completely with blackton, no need for an apology. There's been too many of these  "gaffes" by many Clinton top aides to convince me it's no accident. The Clintons are pros in campaign hardball, even the occasional below the belt cagey shot by surrogates. They know exactly what they are doing and they backtrack  only when it backfires.

Hillary's campaign since she lost Iowa has been shameless and disgraceful.

Ok, just so we have this straight:

Marty: "This (Cuomo stuff) is HILLARY'S lowest point"

Marty: "Ooops, it never happened."

Marty: "Sorry Cuomo"

Marty: "Sorry Readers"

Marty: "Hillary, go to blazes"

Yeah, classy.

Sangre, Marty, the Spanish word is Sangre. The Inquisitor would be pissed scarily annoyed at your attempt to use Spanish. (Or -- could it be -- you're trying your hand at Ladino?)
