How TNR Exposed A New Oprah-Endorsed Memoir As A Hoax

Last week, TNR published an article by Gabriel Sherman, whose original reporting revealed that a new Oprah-touted Holocaust memoir, Angel at the Fence, was a hoax. Based on interviews with top scholars, Sherman concluded that Herman Rosenblat likely fabricated his story of having been saved in a sub-camp of the Buchenwald concentration camp by a girl who threw apples to him over the fence. (According to Rosenblat's story, he later met her in New York on a blind date and married her.)  The publishing company stopped responding to Sherman when he questioned the book's fact-checking process. Rosenblat's agent refused to comment for the original article, but Harris Salamon, the producer of a new movie based on Rosenblat's story, vociferously defended the story's veracity to Sherman. (TNR’s Noam Scheiber criticized “Rosenblat’s shameless defenders” who “invoke the fabricator's moral authority as a survivor to defend the apparent lies or embellishments.”)

Over the next two days, Sherman continued to report the story. On the morning of December 26, responding to Sherman's first article, Berkley released a statement to the Associated Press affirming that the publisher and author stood behind the story. Later that day, Sherman published a second article, in which Rosenblat's sister-in-law and three other Holocaust survivors all confirmed that the story was fabricated. Sherman also received more information regarding the scant to nonexistent fact-checking process for the book. The publisher also refused to comment for the second article.

The day after Sherman’s second article appeared, Rosenblat confessed to his agent, Andrea Hurst, that he had fabricated the love story, and Berkley announced that they are canceling the publication of the book. Following the announcement, Kenneth Waltzer, the Michigan State professor who originally questioned the story’s veracity, spoke to Sherman about the danger of Rosenblat’s fabrication. Hurst emailed a statement to say that she is “stunned and disappointed” by the lie. Salamon says that he will still be making the movie as a “fictionalized adaptation of his story,” but that he "may rewrite elements of the script to reflect recent revelations.” Sherman also spoke with Rosenblat's son after the revelation, who described the episode as "always hurtful."

On the evening of December 28, after both of Sherman's articles and follow-up interviews appeared, The New York Times published an account by Joseph Berger and Motoko Rich of the contorversy around Angel at the Fence. According to a source, Berger had received a tip weeks ago that Rosenblat's memoir was a hoax. But after initially interviewing Rosenblat, Berger concluded that his story held up, and didn't pursue it.

Sherman reported on December 29 that Salamon is considering legal action against the publishing company, while Hurst has consulted a lawyer to protect her interests. "I wanted to help him make his dream come true. From a dream to a nightmare, it is still unbelievable to me," Hurst told Sherman. The publisher of a children's book based on Rosenblat's story, Angel Girl, has now pulled the book from stores and is offering refunds for people who had bought it.

To the editors-

Gabriel Sherman writes: "When I asked Ken [Rosenblat] how his parents could have lived a double life for some 15 years, he explained that for his mother, who survived the Holocaust as a child by hiding as a Polish Catholic, living with an assumed identity was almost natural. 'My mother lived a life of hiding. It was natural for them to lie, to cheat, and this is something that they lived with,' he told me."

One way to see the deception perpetrated by Herman Rosenblat and his wife is that it may derive, at least in part, from the terrible suffering inflicted upon them during the Holocaust. To live with such overwhelming horrors, I would suggest, can twist a man's mind, distort his judgment, eat away at his very soul, even decades after the fact.

This is not to exuse those lies, but simply to try to understand them, place them within a context.

Add to this the mindless elevation of victimhood in this country, the mindless celebration of victimhood on talk show after talk show after talk show--the proclaiming of one's wounds, of being praised and respected for the mere fact of one's wounds (not for the manner in which one has responded to them)--add this into the mix, and the credulous celebration of the Rosenblats' fabricated suffering (like the credulous celebration of James Frey's fabricated suffering) seems as much a reflection of the corruption of our culture as of the liars themselves.

I would refer you to a line from Norman Manea (who was imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp as a child, and then, as an adult, was a dissident under Ceausescu):

"Suffering. . .corrupts," writes Norman Manea, "and suffering peddled publicly corrupts absolutely."

My mother never talked about whay happened. Being a victim is not an elevated position. Deep inside I knew that it would be cruel to rehash these events. I never brought them up. Immediately the antennas should have gone up that these two people would be so forthright with their past. Lying ,and cheating are not typical behavior for holocost survivors. Pride in Israel, pride in being Jewish, and a hatred of criminal indecency are.

What a shame!  The story of Rosenblatt's brothers (www.tnr.com/.../story.html)  and their effort to survive and to protect him would have been a marvelous story!  Instead, he has to make up this lie and diminish everyone associated with him.

Of course TNR exposed this hoax!  Over the years, more than any other periodical this side of the National Enquirer, TNR has shown itself as THE expert in fabulism.  I guess what I'm saying is: it takes one to know one.  Congrats!  Stand up!  You deserve it!

Am I the only one who thinks that the amount of ink (or rather: screen space) TNR has put into this has been grossly disproportional to the import of the story?

I mean, TNR is one of the leading opinion-makers in liberal America. Does uncovering what, in the end, is a somewhat sordid scandal about an individual fabulist who was on Oprah, really merit such a day-upon-day sequence of shout-it-from-the-roofs emphasis on a blog about general politics? Is touting your own horn to this extent about revealing one Holocaust survivor to be a huckster really worthy of TNR's status?

You'll have noticed that the whole series of posts about this subject has attracted very few comments. It's also not exactly been a story that had the national media spacing their headline news for. I dunno. The whole story has obviously been a tragedy, and that film producer clearly comes out looking like a real piece of work. But the way TNR has breathlessly covered its own role in the story, as if it had just uncovered a new Watergate or something, has turned what should have been due respect for your investigative chops into a slight distaste about your sensationalism. At least on my part.
