Quick-Draw McGraw

While we're on the subject of wacky Democratic governors, word in Nashville has it that Tim McGraw is seriously considering a run at the governor’s mansion in 2010. He's been floating the idea for a few years now, but with the recent thrashing of lawyer Bob Tuke by Lamar Alexander in last month’s senate race, Tennessee Dems have been casting about desperately for a high-profile Democrat not named Harold Ford to take on Bill Frist, who is almost certainly going to run. And they could do a lot worse, I suppose, than the Indian Outlaw. Which is saying something.

And yes, that would make Faith Hill the first lady of Tennessee.

Is it wrong to think that Tennessee is a good place for regional celebrities to run for Congress or governor but not New York or Massachusetts?  I don't know a whole lot about Tennessee's insider network, but I would presume that it is loaded with GOPniks, and that it might take a beloved pop-country singer to disrupt that.   Especially when we're talking about running against elite-educated Bill Frist.

Does this mean I have to stop cringing at McGraw's music? Because his brand of country is so completely in line with the artistic rot that is contemporary popular country that I'd always just assumed McGraw to be a hardcore conservative, and I like tying my aesthetic and political tastes into neat little packages like that. (And I even gave McGraw a bit of a break on account of being such a fan of his dad, but crap music is crap music no matter how generously you approach it.)

Or perhaps there's a better solution: Name Chicago's very own Jon Langford to succeed Obama, thereby putting the best country artist in the Senate alongside McGraw to balance things out. Here's the Welsh-born Langford leading the Waco Brothers in "The Death of Country Music":

Look at it this way, Rhubarbs: if he becomes governor you can stop cringing at his music because he won't be making it any more...
