Great Moments in Cinematic Candor

Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. on the hero-stuffed Avengers movie, currently slated for 2011:

[I]f we don't get it right, it's really going to suck.

Yes, it probably is. Downey also shares this reminiscence:

I remember going to the MTV Video Music Awards with Anthony Michael Hall and David Lee Roth, driving down Fifth Avenue in a convertible Studebaker. David was wearing white gloves and tails. I was like, "Dude, is it ever going to get more modern than this?"

How time passes.

Time does not pass for DLR. In his mind, it's still 1985, he still looks  good is assless pants,  and a Van Halen reunion is just around the corner.

It'll probably suck anyway.  I can't see an ensemble superhero movie working.  The best setup is one hero, one villain, some supporting characters.  The best superhero movies so far, Superman, Superman 2, Spiderman, Spiderman 2,  Batman Begins, and the Dark Knight, all have a relatively tight focus.  Moreover, each comes with a strong character arc for a main character.  Superman, Batman Begins, and Spiderman focus on the origins of their heroes, while Superman 2 and Spiderman 2 focus on how the hero lives with his powers.  The Dark Knight is unique as almost being The Departed for Superheroes, focusing on a sprawling crime story over an individual arc, but its focus on the trio of Batman, Dent and the Joker works well.  However, in most cases the bigger the cast, the bigger the bloat and the worse the movie is, because it gives in to the temptation to ignore characters and focus all on special effects.  Batman and Robin, Spiderman 3, and the Fantastic Four films all either have too many good guys or too many villains, but not enough plot.  I can't see this movie  being much more than a giant piece of toyetic CGI.

Agree with everything Crock said.  Though I still enjoyed Superman 3!  An underrated movie in my book... OK, so it got a little goofy at times, but I still think it works.  The whole Superman vs. Himself thing is cool.  And I'm hoping for that VH reunion tour.

Joe and jhunger--VH already re-uned this year and travelled. Ya missed it!  They were in the Chicago area over the summer. Sorry.

I think an ensemble super-hero piece COULD work, just as other multiple character movies/stories works. It depends on the writing and editing.
