The Other Glass Ceiling

Tragically lost amid all the trivial hoopla surrounding Barack Obama's election to the presidency has been another cultural breakthrough decades in the making: Tony Dow (a.k.a. Wally Cleaver) will be the first cast member of "Leave it to Beaver" to have his sculpture displayed at Louvre.

Sadly, Eddie Haskell's performance piece, "Good Morning Mrs. Cleaver--How's the Beaver?" was rejected.

Wally Cleaver was cute in a clean cut and wholesome way.  Tony Dow hasn't aged well.

satyendra, Tony Dow is 63, I don't think he looks that much older than 61 but I don't think we can judge peoples health based on superficial appearences. He might be as healthy as a horse.

Anyway, it is still a helluva accomplishment. Hopefully it will allow him to step out of the Beavers shadow into the light of day. It must have been hard on him to be so attached to the Beaver. It is surprising his work is not artistically flaccid after all these years, it is good he is so endowed with such an ability.

Now I thought you meant there was a sculpture *of* Wally Cleaver at the Louvre, rather than *by* Wally Cleaver. I was imagining him next to Nike of Samothrace, and thinking he'd bear the comparison quite well.

On first reading, I thought this was about a sculpture _of_ Tony Dow, not _by_ Tony Dow. My response to which was, "But Hugh Beaumont would make a much better subject."

Where's Jed Perl when you need him?

Otherwise I'm actually disinclined to joke, for some reason.  Good for him; the only way I'll ever get in the Louvre is by buying a ticket.

epicciuto and Rhubarbs, I got the same 1st impression as well.

Blackton, by "age well" I meant in this case that I no longer thought he was cute, though there are plenty of older people I find attractive, for their age.  It's true that he looks to have an age-appropriate level of health.  I think also you can sometimes judge someone's overall health by their photo.  Do they look puffy, tired, pockmarked, boozy, lifted?

He'd be a lot better looking if he'd stuck to his LTB haircut. Other than that [which is huge] I think he's still fine.
