TNRtv: Fairbanks on Rahm Emanuel, House Mafioso, as Obama's Chief of Staff

TNR associate editor Eve Fairbanks takes issue with today's report that Obama will select House bruiser Rahm Emanuel as Chief of Staff: why Obama doesn't want a "yes man," where GOP charges of Emanuel partisanship fall short, and how the "Tony Soprano" of congress would run things in the White House.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Eve.

I was personally really excited when I read that story at two in the morning. Really perked me up, actually. Rahm is just like me, in fact: a descendant of Israeli Revisionist Zionists who is liberal on social issues, moderately hawkish on foreign policy, and a pragmatist when it comes to governance. On the other hand, I can't say I've ever mailed a dead fish to anyone.

I think Eve is conflating partisan and ideological. Rahm is not ideological at all - his strategy has been to elect conservative-enough Democrats elected in Republican districts. He's intensely partisan, however, as this strategy shows: totally committed to expanding Democratic power. (God bless him.)

Oh my god-- is anyone testing this piece of junk? Message to TNR: the player does not work, it buffers every SECOND, not every two seconds.

Rahm would certainly run a tight ship in the White House, but I'm thinking Tom Daschle might be a more appropriate, less confrontational pick for Chief of Staff.

Remember the Tina Fey plug for Hillary: Bitches Get Stuff Done!! That is Rahm Emanuel. Rahm gets stuff done, and that's why he was head of the DCCC and is being looked at (at least by all of us gawkers) as a potential chief of staff. Rahm kicks butt and takes names. I think he'd be awesome. Tom Daschle would indeed be "nicer" but i think maybe a little more toughness wouldn't hurt. If everyone in congress fears him equally, wouldn't they all do what he wants!?

Is an association to Rezko not enough to see the organized crime figure in Obama?

Do we need more proof?

No, No NO! Never Rahm Emanuel! This was the same man who denigrated the 50 state strategy of Dean and tried to remove him from his chairmanship of the DNC. And now it looks that that Dean strategy is responsible in part for O's lead in the polls.

Rahm is the same kind of inside-the-beltway player who is more beholden to big business and the powers to be then the middle class and most of us progressive Dems!

If O does appoint him as Chief of Staff, making him one of the msot powerful politicians in the USA, I will give up on the Dem party EVER being the party of change!

Rahm is the same old beltway power player, and not the change we need or deserve!

Dear TNR webmasters-

Whatever your system of moderating comments is....IT ISN'T WORKING!

When it takes 4 hours to actuallly see my comment appear, it disscourages me from wanting to leave comments here, because I never know if they will actually appear.

Can't you figure out some way to moderate comments in a more businesslike way? In most of the other sites I go to they either appear immediately, or if they are moderated, they appear on the page with that message, so you know your comment counted.

Please do something to fix this will you?
