GOP Maverick Fail

The polls for the Presidential race may be tightening once again, but that hasn’t stopped vulnerable Republicans from jumping ship—if not for the Obama camp, than at least as far away from the McCain campaign as possible. In my story in the current issue of TNR, I explain how Chris Shays, the only New England Republican in the House, has imperiled his own chances for survival by openly embracing the McCain-Palin ticket. Well, it looks like Shays himself has realized the hazards of such loyalty in a district where Obama is now leading by 59 percent. From the AP:

“He has lost his brand as a maverick," Rep. Chris Shays, a Connecticut Republican and co-chairman of the McCain campaign in that state, told the Yale Daily News in the latest criticism. "He did not live up to his pledge to fight a clean campaign.”

Shays’s harsh appraisal is a real turnaround from the full-throated praise that he has espoused for the GOP ticket up until now. The Connecticut representative is currently running neck and neck with Jim Himes, the Democratic challenger in the 4th district, and his recent comments sound like a last-minute attempt to win over voters who’ve long had faith in Shays’s own version of moderate, independent-minded Republicanism. But, at this point, Shays’s about-face seems like too little, way too late. Whatever the outcome in Connecticut’s 4th, it seems clear that McCain won’t be the only one to have tarnished his maverick brand in this election.

Have you people lost your mind?  Your link to the evidence of the polls tightening points to a post on this blog panicking about why the polls *might* tighten?  The polls ARE NOT TIGHTENING.  That Nate Silver guy -- maybe you've heard of him? -- I think you should start reading his stuff.  And maybe pour yourself a stiff drink to calm your nerves while you're at it.

Umm, no, Obama doesn't lead *by* 59 percent, Obama leads *with* 59 percent. at least according to the link in your post:

.....Obama also lead that (Survey USA) poll 59% to 37%.

22% is a big lead, but it's not 59%.

I don't know whether TNR's editors and bloggers actually read these comments, but if so, I'd like to ask you: are you really convinced that this is "the smartest blog on the web," or is that now an ironic joke?

Today, along with the bogus freak-out posts about "tightening polls," you guys actually had the audacity to run two pieces of "analysis" that speculate -- and I don't think I'm paraphrasing too crudely -- that the sight of negroes lining up at the polls threatens to turn white swing voters towards McCain.

This is an astonishing claim, and one that reflects a contempt for the American electorate that exceeds even my own. "Anecdotal" evidence is not sufficient here.

And much like George W. Bush, when you guys make a mistake, you just keep running away, pretending that it never happened. A few days ago, you ran a story that hastily (and very unpersuasively) absolved McCain's "national" campaign from any responsibility for the bizarre anti-McCain "mutilation attack." WELL. The "national campaign" has now -- TWICE -- repeated a lie that its local campaign was in no way responsible for communicating details to the media. (A more responsible blog, Talking Points Memo, has continued, doggedly, to report this story: www.talkingpointsmemo.com/.../240780.php)

McCain leaks false details of a racially motivated attack to the media, and then lies about its own role in the media circus, and TNR literally makes no mention of it. If you refuse to discuss this on the blog, can you at least put up a post explaining why you've decided not to discuss it?

Uh, I think the genius meant "run" a clean campaign rather than "fight" one. How dumb-butt can one get?

santoast - right on!  Strewth, you'd think that some TNR staff *enjoy* the Democrats being out of power.  Instead of hand wringing, how about enthusing people to get out and vote?  It's not like what you're currently doing could be called objective journalism, so the punditry may as well be positive and try to contribute achieve what is assumedly our common goal (right?). Unless you feel that all this chicken little business is going to motivate people?
