Ashley Todd, We Hardly Knew Ye

Out of a sense of morbid curiosity, I checked the conservative blogs to see how they're handling the Ashley Todd hoax. Michelle Malkin, to her credit, stated the obvious, which was that the incident was extremely hard to believe. Ace of Spades, on the other hand, wrote, "It's looking more likely true," and continued, "doubts are mostly gone now that I see the picture."

Today, with the hoax having been admitted by the perpetrator, Ace writes, "I was forced to defend her on the small chance she was on the level." So now he's admitting that he was, essentially, participating in the hoax -- he realized there was only a small chance it was true, but he told his readers that it was likely.

I don't think the actions of one sick volunteer say anything at all about John McCain or his campaign. They do, however, tell us a lot about right-wing yellow journalists, from Drudge on down, who manipulated primitive racial-sexual fears for partisan gain.

Give the guy a break; it's not his fault.  Apparently, an unidentified 6'4" black man was so enraged by Ace of Spades' support of John McCain that he held him down and forced him to defend Ashley Todd.

I never thought I'd see the day when someone wrote "Michelle Malkin, to her credit..." and I agreed. Perhaps there's hope for the vast right-wing conspiracy yet.

Does anyone out there really believe that this sick girl cooked up the attack on herself completely  on her own? McCain campiagn and the creepy rightwing bloggers were instant in their response to this and they all seemed to be reading from the same script of pushing the story to the regular media. I think the right smells defeat and is now in theikr desperation phase where we can expect more ourtageous stnuts like this.

frilz, I really believe she cooked it up on her own. Backwards B, a black eye that looked like make-up. It's sort of like Munchausen's - occasionally people will go to great lengths to excite attention and pity for themselves. There have been other cases like this.

epicciuto, I agree with you that she likely carried out the bogus attack on herself on her own (the "B" on her face didn't look backwards to her in the mirror, I guess), however the response by the McCain campaign and the bloggers was too well coordinated and scripted for mere coincidence. For gosh sakes, even McCain & Palin THEMSELVES  personally phoned this very gullible woman! Sorry, I ain't buyin' this crock, she's only the tip of the iceberg for my money.

Add to this the 75,000 e-mails sent in Pennsylvania, signed by top members of the state and national McCain campaign comparing Obama to the rise of Hitler and the Nazis.

Why not? People do that all the time.

In France were you get attacks on Jews all the time a girl made up a story of one such an attack.

It doesn't take a genius to make up a story only a willingness to call attention to oneself.

The fact that Obama supporters want to see every event that counters their idol as a kind of conspiracy says more about them than about the McCain campaign.

Jacksondyer, I can understand your hesitation in thinking that McCain's campaign could stoop to something not only so low, but stupid, as to find an unstable young woman and get her to mutilate herself and blame it on a black man. But if you look at the responses in real time by the McCain campaign and the rightwing bloggers (as well as McCain and Palin themselves!), where they make a big push to get major media outlets to make this a major story, then you begin to see a desperate attempt to change the dynamics of the Pa. vote, which is do or die for any chance McCain has to win the election. If you still have any lingering doubts then please note the palpable disappointment in the responses made by the McCain people in Pa. and the rightwing bloggers. They were CLEARLY deflated by the news that this poor girl's lies had been exposed. Lastly, never forget how unbelievable it was for most people that Nixon staffers and paid operatives could have been involved in a "third rate burglary" attempt of the Dem Watergate HQ. But Republicans have never hesitated to do ANYTHING to win and never will. In 2008, fortunately, it won't work.

In America, almost all thuggery comes from the Left.  The Right in America, has never been known to pull or pummel off an Ivy League stage a speaker with whom it disagreed.

Wish we could say that for Lefties.

So, while the story was bizarre, it was hardly beyond the realm of possibility, at least in broad strokes.

As the details were revealed, it sounded kind of rickety.
