Palin-Wurzelbacher 2012!

Hard as it is to imagine that they could find a more hollow way to indulge their Romance of the Common Man than the vice presidential nomination of Sarah Palin, the McCain campaign seems eager to keep their gimmick du jour, Joe the Plumber (née Wurzelbacher), center stage as long as possible.

Politico's Jonathan Martin:

“I'm probably going to call him this morning," McCain said. "I thought he would probably be up late. I heard that his — that his phone lines were pretty well flooded. But I think we're going to be spending some time together.”

More:

Amie Parnes reports from a McCain rally in Downington, Pa: “The real winner last night was Joe the Plumber,” McCain said, laughing. “Joe’s the man.”

“Joe! Joe! Joe!,” the crowd chanted.

Do not expect this ardor to be dampened by the facts that Wurzelbacher is not an independent, makes nowhere near the $250,000 that prompted his question to Obama, and is not, in fact, a licensed plumber.

Oh Chris, they never let facts get in the way.  As Colbert has said, facts have a well known liberal bias.

Why wait until 2012? McCain-Wurzelbacher 2008, my friends.

Anyway, wasn't there a movie recently about a presidential election decided by the vote of a downscale semi-skilled laborer who attracts undeserved national attention? Starred that guy from "Bull Durham," if I recall. At the time, I thought it was supposed to be a parody. Now I wish I'd seen it, so I could know how this "Joe the Plumber" storyline ends.

Joe's had a sex change?

Actually, given the state of the economy I don't think anything that keeps the $1/4million figure in the public eye really hurts Obama. It just serves to remind everyone how out of touch McCain really is.

Back in the day, I had a Palin-Wurzelbacher, but

(a) a mouse chewed through one of the wires and the solenoid burned out

(b) a groupie pawned it while I was on stage opening for Procol Harum

(c) on the advice of my doctor I had it removed before it spread to my spleen

(d) I got tired of shooting at ducks so I gave it to Charlie to clear up my bar tab

(e) it never did keep time, although you can't beat 'em for toenail clipping, and that wind-direction feature was kinda neat

(f) as they say, if you have to ask what it is, you can't afford it

(f) all of the above!

Joe the Plumber's a tax cheat who's misrepresented himself.

He'll go far in the Republican Party.

Germany invites you to visit scenic Palin-Wurzelbacher - it's like Bavaria, but with more coveralls and less lederhosen!

The story just gets better. The Huffington Post is now reporting that Joe the Plumber has a connection to Charles Keating:

I think Mr. Orr raises an interesting point.  Joe the Plumber is, essentially, a fictitious person and Senators Obama and McCain argued througout the night about how to best treat him. .  I mean, there is a man complaining of a problem he doesn't have and he becomes a central figure in American politics for at least an hour and a half, if not days and weeks.  That  is our political system in a nutshell -- find a problem,  convince the country that it is the most important problem, and that you have the right answer for it, and you can get elected president.  It doesn't even have to be a real problem but it has to be bigger than the other guy's problem.

My two favorite post-scripts are that Joe the Plumber not only will not get a tax increase, but he <a href="www.dailykos.com/.../632515" doesn't pay the taxes</a> that he does owe!

And, did anyone notice, the guy is actually an anti-Obama skinhead!!
