With Sources Like These...

The NYT has a hilarious, if utterly terrifying, profile today of Andy Martin, the guy who launched the web whisper campaign about Obama being a closet Muslim. What disturbs me most isn't that Martin was once barred from joining the Illinois state bar because of a psychiatric finding of "moderately severe character defect manifested by well-documented ideation with a paranoid flavor and a grandiose character." Nor is it that Martin has such a history of filing frivolous lawsuits that he has been banned from filing suit in any federal courthouse without prior approval. It's not even that Martin has a long, proud history of anti-semitic slurs including court filings featuring such jewels as: "Jews, historically and in daily living, act through clans and in wolf pack syndrome," and, even more colorfully, "I am able to understand how the Holocaust took place, and with every passing day feel less and less sorry that it did."

No, what troubles me most is this is the kind of political source Fox News is now showcasing in its election reporting.

They report. You decide.

Not to be an ass, but Fox is precisely where I would expect a sociopath like this to showcase himself. Have you paid attention to the stuff Bill and Sean put out? You could have him make a guest appearance on either show and call the episode dumb and dumber. We'll let Sean figure out who is who, though.

If Obama wanted to deliver a wicked body shot to FoxNews, all he needs to do is to do is this:

1. Go to a senior citizen's center or synagogue in Florida.

2. Describe Andy Martin's fawning reception by Sean Hannity.

3. Repeat Martin's use of the term "exterminating Jew power."

4. Repeat Martin's statement about understanding why the Holocaust happened.

5. Follow it up with a campaign commercial showing the above in every state with a substantial Jewish population.

Of course, McCain would then be faced with a decision: do I repudiate Hannity, one of my most loyal supporters, or do I make excuses for it, and thereby open myself up to another round of intense criticism, not to mention write off Florida?

Well, being that Iran-contra criminal Oliver North was a reporter for Fox (or still is, I don't know) this comes as very little surprise.

(Caveat: I didn't see the Fox News showcase), but at what point does this become a story worthy of being reported by Fox's competitors?  This dude is a bona fide nut case, and we have a major news network using him as a source?  The other networks should pounce on Fox for this!

The NYTimes article quoted a Fox executive hiding behind the "its just an opinion" defense - i.e., we take no position on the truth or falsehood of these allegations, we are only reporting Mr. Martin's opinion.  How ridiculous!  You can't report obvious and known falsehoods just because in someone's opinion it is a fact.

TNR has been tracking and commenting on the cowing of the press for a while now.  One observation that has been repeatedly made is the way the press has been afraid to call out viewpoints that are just plain wrong, for the fear of being called partisan.  Instead, the press presents the known and obvious truth, then presents the known and obvious lie, both on equal footing, with almost no indication as to the ridiculousness of one of the positions.  This needs to stop!

I think it would be great if one of the networks had a little special of there own, an expose' of Mr. Martin and Fox News' use of his "opinions".  They could increase their own credibility while dealing a body blow to the credibility of a competitor.

I especially liked how FNC was a leading beater of the "Wright blames America for 9/11!!!" drum, while maintaining a relationship with Pat Robertson, who... also blamed America!  Apparently these guys are far beyond cognitive dissonance.

Yes, I read this article in my morning copy of the Times. Upon reaching the halfway point of the article, I decided to start a mass e-mail to everyone I know with the truth of the matter. Fight fire with honest fire.

Sean Hannity diddles male baby squirrels for sexual gratification.

I give TNR permission to use this information and post it online. They can later say it is just my opinion.

As to where I got the information, let me just say if it wasn't Sean Hannity, it sure as hell looked like him.
