So Much for that Change of Course

Earlier, I expressed a bit of skepticism regarding Politico's scoop that the McCain campaign was planning to drop its guilt-by-association strategy of tying Barack Obama to William Ayers. Apparently the skepticism was well-founded.

The Politico story may be technically accurate, though, as it quotes McCain aides suggesting the candidate would avoid such attacks, not the campaign.

So that, evidently, is the plan: Keep John McCain's own fingers clean, while his aides and surrogates (paging Governor Palin!) shovel muck with both hands. One way to describe this kind of faux deniability would be as rank cynicism. Another would be as sheer cowardice.

That's what Obama did when his campaign accused Hillary and Bill Clinton of being racists but he kept his hands clean.  It's how he has managed to keep a reputation of being a post-partisan candidate notwithstanding the viciousness of his campaign's attacks.

I thought McCain not bringing up Ayers last night was a good indication the campaign does not actually believe there is much to the story - and certainly not enough to convince the American people.

Hey, gotta give them credit for one thing - they've found something Sarah Palin is actually good at.

Actually, this release is the Willie Horton ad *and* the Swiftboat of the cycle.  It and the POWPOW horror show should be slammed hard and without mercy - including dragging the harpy's drug addiction into the race.

bigm: yeah, calling Bill on his race-baiting is as "vicious" as calling Obama a traitor and a terrorist.  Right.

Watching the post-debate on MSNBC last night, I thought Rachel Maddow had a very good point about McCain using Ayers as a campaign issue.  To paraphrase "If you're going to use Ayers to smear/attack Obama everywhere and the only place you don't mention is when Obama is there too, then you're really just a chickensh*t."  Ok, Maddow may have been more graceful about it, but the point remains, if McCain really thinks that Obama's association with Ayers (to whatever degree it is) really does disqualify him, then he should be willing to say so.  But it's clear that McCain is just a wimp spreading gossip behind the popular guy's back but not willing to actually confront him and have to stand-up for what he's saying.  Classy.

I think this is what is called "microtargeting."

If you're the kind of moron who thinks Palin would make a great president and is willing to wait in line to listen to her butcher the English language, then you're probably dumb enough to believe the Ayers/terrorist crap.

If you're not that kind of moron, then you're probably going to think that the McCain campaign is just shoveling desperately when you hear that kind of thing.

Of course, there are two problems with this strategy (or is it tactic?):

1. McCain already has a lock on the moron vote, and isn't in real danger of losing them.

2. There are currently devices that allow people who aren't at an event to see and hear what's being said there.

I've seen some chaotic campaigns but this group is like three or four Marx Brothers combined. If someone told me they rotated decision makers daily or threw darts at a board of ideas I'd believe it. I'm surprised they function at all considering the multiple tactics they juggle at the same time they're changing course from day to day.

And since her  debate it seems Palin's group went Gonzo and Johnny finds out her plans when he turns on the TV. It reminds me of the late days of the H-Man when he was directing armies that didn't exist anymore and his staff was planning for their escape while he was organizing the redoubt. This could be a once in a lifetime experience over the next two weeks. 'Mr. Hulot Goes To Washington'

miceelf - Sure McCain has the moron vote locked up.  (Microtargeting the microcephalic?) But in front of what other audience could his campaign ever put Miss Embarracuda without potentially causing a riot?  And yes, there are such devices.  This is the hole that McCain has dug for himself.

PUTTING AYERS BACK ON THE TABLE?.... As of this morning, it seemed the McCain campaign, after telegraphing an aggressive attack, had decided to move away from making the rest of the campaign about Bill Ayers. McCain decided not to mention...
