McCain Forgets How Many Glass Houses He Lives In

John McCain's campaign today announced, "Americans need to ask themselves if they’ve ever befriended an unrepentant terrorist, or had a convicted felon help them buy their house."

Neither of these things is true of John McCain. However, McCain has befriended a convicted felon, and his many houses were purchased due to the fortune of convicted criminal Jim Helmsley, his father-in-law.

I think you mean "neither of these things is true of Barack Obama."

And Rezko wasn't a convicted felon when he helped Obama buy that house. Which I think should make a bit of a difference, if we're playing guilt-by-association.

NAIL IN COFFIN OF WHATEVER "HONOUR" POWPOW MIGHT HAVE HAD IN THE FAR REACHES OF PRE-HISTORY.

Sorry for the caps, but I hope that we do not ever hear of "honour" and "McCain" in the same sentence, except in a construction such as "McCain would not recognise 'honour' if he got buggered by it the way Bush has buggered him for seven years."

This whole campaign stinks, and it is now causing concern for Repug "elites".

Choice sentence: "Populism as a strategy, 'we're the good guys, you're the bad guys,' is not good. And if that's the road they are going, that's not a good road to be on. It is not helpful to the country."

Hey - it's Reagan's speechwriter who is saying the McCain is putting politics ahead of the country.  I wonder if the Palin will be quoting her ...

Ahaha, wow that's incriminating.  Apparently McCain thinks the principles and philosophies that keep our country great involve illegal surveillance of rivals and advocating the murder of federal agents.

I find it strange how willing the right is to embrace figures who were involved in really shady stuff.  IIRC Liddy and Oliver North have both been invited on to Fox News to be commentators.  Pretty unpopular associations to broadcast publicly, especially given the GOP's reputed political savvy.

Not to be picky, icarus, but given that your subject and this site is American, you should probably spell the word "honor."

But I know how hard it can be to shake old habits.  I, an American physician working in Australia, deal with these spelling irregularities on a daily basis.  Medicine is full of 'em.

"hemotology" becomes "haematology"

"edema" becomes "oedema"

It effects acronyms too.  In America a transesophageal echocardiogram is commonly referred to as a T.E.E.  whereas here it's a "toe."

I had thought the McCain campaign would not go there precisely because of the glass house problem.

Sorry I was wrong.

OK, bring out Keating if we must.  But could we keep Ayers, Keating, et alii out of the debates, at least?

The Hensleys also had business ties to Charlie Keating, which connects the dots between Jim Hensley, Kemper Marley, Gus Greenbaum, Bugsy Siegel, Charlie Keating, Carl Lindner, Michael Milkin, and Ivan Boesky...and that's just the surface of the Arizona, Cincinnati, Vegas ties, all connected to casinos and the S&L bailout. The connections seem endless: A close relative of Milken's, Stanley Zax, was a president of American Financial, one of Lindner's largest holdings, Zax is now active in California insurance and banking.

As they say, the easiest way to rob a bank is to own one. Meyer Lansky said a lot of clever things.

Aero, first you go all nitpicky on Bill Yard and then on me ;-).  Force of habit, really; but however "honor" is spelt (or spelled), McCain has not got any.

I hope that they don't stop just with Keating.  Since Sarah Barracuda opened the door, they need a ad on the Alaska Independence Party.  Todd Palin was a member of this party for 7 years. A party which calls for the secession of Alaska so I guess they see America is a bit "imperfect" too.  The party was founded by Joe Vogler who died in an an unfortunate plastic explosive accident.

Gennity: I have a suspicion that Obama's Oppo Research people have been working on this.  And, of course, there is Troopergate, and that small matter of the Palin's adulterous liaison.

Good. I hope your right.  And when they're done with that, maybe we can see some ads about McCain's adultery.  And then some ads about the five Navy planes he crashed and all the lies he told about the causes of the crashes to avoid being discharged or court martialled.  And then some ads about the Hensleys ties to organized crime and bootlegging, etc.

And as you open the book on the Savings & Loan scandal, please don't skip the chapter on Neil Bush, who looted Silverado. Remember those "Jail Neil Bush" bumper stickers? Those are now a collectible on eBay.

And then there's Jeb Bush's loan defaults at Broward Federal Savings & Loan in Sunrise, Florida.

Keating, Milken, and Ivan Boesky all went to jail for stealing billions, but the Bush family has stolen much more, for much longer, and they've never spent a day in jail (or been impeached).

Prescott, Jonathan, and George, Sr., together with Neil and Jeb, learned long ago that the easiest way to steal from a bank is to own a bank, the easiest way to steal from the government is to run the government.

You know what, icarus?  I think I'm picking ze nits because 1) I enjoy the conversation here and want to keep a hand in and 2) I am sooooo tired of thinking about Sarah Palin.

I don't really give a shit anymore what McCain/Palin does.  They is finished, I tell ya, FINISHED.  Two words: deck chairs.

I humbly suggest the following, that Eve, Chris, Jason, Michelle, Noam, Mike, Jon and Jon do the following: shut down The Stump, fold its remnant into The Plank, and drastically curtail the posting frequency on either blog.  Let Nate Silver keep giving us his daily updates and let the guest contributors continue to contribute, but instead of devoting yourselves to the constant perusal of the web, trolling for the newest bit of Palin frippery, get out the Rolodex and go ask some important people what the fuck is going on in the world.

Aero: I'm there with you.  My interest in the Palin is purely anthropoligical/sociological; as well, much like Remington Steele, I live in the movies.  The Palin is Chauncey Gardner, Eve Harrington and Larry 'Lonesome' Rhodes (from "A Face in the Crowd") rolled into one; the only question is the denouement, whether she is consigned by the American electorate the ignominy she and POWPOW richly deserve, or whether Bush will declare martial law and install POWPOW in his stead. (Actually "winning" the election fair and square is not an option at this point; neither is theft by stealth, à la Bush v. Gore; we may yet see a "Seven Days in May" moment ....)

But, frankly, the only nit that needs to be picked is the louse Palin ...

I do understand the nausea created by further discussion of Sarah Shortbus.  It seems obvious that the Obama campaign has an ample reserve of Keating and other campaign nukes (nu-cue-lar) ready to roll for October.  The only good thing about McCain's decision to go shock and awe is that he is merely rehashing Hillary's tired material from March and April while the Keating stuff will be fresh and all-too-relevant to the current mess (Actually, McShame could cut production costs by dubbing over Hillary's approval message at the end of each of her spots).  Perhaps we'll be treated to a "Mission Accomplished" ceremony in a flack jacket sometime soon, albeit surrounded by a collection of the deck chairs aero mentions.
