Hello Darkness, My Old Friend

Actually, contrary to early reports, Sarah Palin's answer when Katie Couric asked her what Supreme Court cases she disagreed with other than Roe v. Wade was not "silence." Whether it was better or worse, I'll leave to readers. (Might want to work on that "right to privacy" response, too.) Her comments begin around the two-minute mark.

It's late (it was a great work p*ssup), I'm drunk, but still....Jesus.

Even Dubya must be wondering how the Republican VP nominee came to this. Maybe democracy doesn't work?

Incomprehensible.

First question: Nailed it.

Second question: Not so much.

Third question: Uh....uh....uh....

Biden's answers, on the other hand, remind me why I love the guy.

And in the naked light I saw

Ten thousand people, maybe more.

People talking without speaking,

People hearing without listening,

People playing Goptcha Journalism.

Take my arms that I might reach you.

But my words like silent raindrops fell,

And echoed

In the wells of silence

Dear Lord. I'm almost relieved that she can string a coherent sentence together. But she doesn't hold a candle to Biden.

Oh, come on now.  She discussed geopolitics with world leaders.  She give foreign policy advice to McCain.  She nailed her debate and ad libbed her convention speech.  She is a formidable thinker.  She is Cicero and Churchill rolled into one, plus the cutting intellect of Mencken and the comedy skills of Will Rogers.

YOU UNESTIMATE HER AT YOUR PERIL!!

P.s. What the fuck does the right to privacy have to do with states' rights?

She's just out of her league.

I've been savoring every negative story about her, but now I just kind of feel sorry for her.

If McCain picks someone else it'll be a serious mark against his judgment.

The contrast between Biden's understanding of the issues and hers couldn't be more stark.

Aauggh!  We must raise the bar for Palin on this debate.  She is a stronger wit than Mark Twain.  Her tongue is more savage than H.L. Mencken's.  She is a better quote machine than Benjamin Franklin.

If Biden shows up and doesn't drool on himself, he wins, that is how formidable this monster of erudition can be.  If Biden can actually eek out a full sentence or two, as he wipes the awe-struck look from his face, he wins against this machine.

Raise the bar.

I vote "worse".

She really just should have said, "I'll get back to ya!" She was doing her soundbite cut'n'mix dj bit again, and the only thing I could glean for any kind of actual answer would have been " I disagree with any decision that infringes upon states' rights, whatever those might be, which I don't know what they are, but I know that they happened in what I like to call 'history'".

DO NOT FEEL SORRY FOR HER!!!! SHE IS A GOD-DAMN PITBULL WITH LIPSTICK!!!! SHE TOOK THIS JOB WITHOUT BLINKING - she was as snide as she could be during her Convention speech - she has lied about absolutely everything, including her teleprompter breaking during her Convention speech. NO MERCY!!

Quite the contrast! You can certainly see where her knowledge stops. But I've never understood this expectations game. The only reasonable expectation is that the candidate is capable of doing the job, if elected. This isn't golf, and you don't get a handicap.

Here's a prediction. Tomorrow we will see conservative pundits all attacking Biden's reasoning about the Violence Against Women Act, trying to drown out the discussion of Palin's latest flub. Anybody wanna make a bet on it?

Does the fact that CBS is running ads for "Worst Week" at the front and back of that video mean anything?

Gov. Palin, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

dhchait - Nice catch.

It would be really nice to have a civil and informed debate on whether the right to privacy was correctly applied in Roe v. Wade during a Presidential debate.  I guess this is as close as we'll come.

Again, I hope kgrant is wrong and we aren't being rope-a-doped (good points kgrant).  Let's keep expectations high.  An acquaintance told me today that three 20-somethings that planned to vote, were at the water cooler discussing how the president doesn't need to be smart, but just hire smart people.

To start with the obvious, how does does a less than sharp president know who's smart and who's blowing smoke when it comes to choosing advisers or cabinet members?  Obviously, these three would defer the question to someone smarter than them.

"What other Supreme Court decisions do you disagree with?" "Oh, I've read most of them - again with a great appreciation for the Court, which is the Supreme Court in our land, and your land too, because this land is all our lands, and we should respect the court because it's Supreme." "I'll ask again, can you name just one other decision you disagree with?" "Well, like I said, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years. People think that way out in Alaska we've never heard of the Supreme Court and don't get any tv or newspapers and that we're really clueless about how many justices are on the Court - which is nine by the way - and the rulings they rule that can affect us no matter where we live, especially those of us who live in states where we should be the ones deciding the laws of the land that apply to our lands."
