GOP Crackup Watch

You know things are getting dicey when the RNC goes on the air with an ad attacking the very bailout plan that, 24 hours ago, was the centerpiece of John McCain's claim of economic leadership.

On the plus side, it does suggest that the RNC either isn't coordinating with the McCain campaign or is doing so very poorly.

Update: Ben Smith helps explain the snafu:

The Republican National Committee's new advertisement critical of the the Wall Street "bailout" was produced and sent to television stations in key states before the package failed, officials at two stations said....[The ad] seems to assume that it can safely attack a successful plan. And the reason may be the timing: Though it started airing this morning, the spot was released to stations yesterday morning, ad executives at stations in Michigan and Pennsylvania said.

 Oops.

Who says the RNC isn't coordinating with McCain?  McCain has shown himself perfectly capable of making two logically inconsistent statements simultaneously. In this case it works like this:

"John McCain is leading the creation of a 'rescue plan' to head off a disaster for our economy. "

"Barack Obama wants to use one trillion of your taxpayer dollars to bail out fat cat Wall Street investors."

Both statements, or course, are 'true.'  Heads I win, tails you lose.

On the positive side, the more crap they put out, the less believable it will sound, even if they are right, which they are not.  It used to be said that voters have short memories; it referred to the idea that you could what you want and say what you want six months before the election, and then tack left or right and no one would notice.  Well, now they are tacking every which way, with no coherent direction, simply punching out and away (sorry for the mixed metaphors) ... and expect the voter not to notice.

This is what happens when you become too enamoured of your own genius.  Someone should tell POWPOW that Rove was not really all that good; that his tactics worked in a specific context and against specific candidates, and that the same conditions might replicate themselves.  For one thing, McCain's brother is not the governor of Florida; for another, there is no Katherine Harris in Ohio.  And so on.

They really going "batshit".  Fun to watch, really.  The collapse and utter decimation of POWPOW McCain can't come too soon; this is Schadenfreude at its most sublime.

Darrel Issa (R-CA) told Matthews on Hardball "...our President and our Treasury Secretary is wrong and we're saying he's wrong...we're fighting this administration.."

He then distanced himself from the current McCain. So? The Fall '08 version of the GOP, RNC or Team McCain may be cracking up but people are deciding who will be around in '10. The best way to get there has been decided and they have put Bush on the shelf. The next few days will prove if they're using McCain as a straw man because he's not looking like the best ride to where they're going. I think 2/3rds of The House was happy to dupe McCain if he wouldn't front for them. John didn't realize it but they made a "with us or against us" offer and smiled till they took him and Bush down with the vote.

Do watch the crackup but keep an eye on anyone but Bush, McCain and '08 RNC lineup. Schmidt and Davis know they're low on fuel with no friendly runway in sight. They have a pilot but he may not be taking them where they need to go.

The question we should be asking: "Where will John point the aircraft to save his ass?"
