I would include McCain's brilliant rebuke of the Iowa newscaster in 2000 on the topic of ethanol:

This is the strength of McCain -- when he can summon up his contrarian instincts in the service of something actually worthwhile, he can be a powerful advocate.

Unfortunately, he's really jumped the shark in this election.

Actually, McCain's best debate performance happened tonight. He won tonight's debate already, as evidenced by the ad that his campaign ran on the WSJ site this morning. The ad said "McCain Wins Debate." (See The Fix at WaPo for a screenshot.)

It's good to know in advance that McCain won the debate, because this saves us all the tedium of watching. This shows the kind of measured, even-tempered judgment we need in a Commander-in-Chief.

I look forward to discovering what lies ahead next week for Senator Blutarsky--er, McCain.

This makes me realize that McCain goes in to this debate with a big strength - if he comes across as the moderate guy once again, he wins.
