Obama Is "Lifeless, Aloof, and Windy"

So says Obama's spokesman Bill Burton who, in a bit of expectations lowering, has sent out an email linking to articles (like this AP one, from which I got the above quote) containing negative assessments of Obama's debate skills. Will the McCain campaign now start describing their guy as old, out of touch, and erratic?

Update: Ben Smith smartly notes that the same Burton memo makes the Obama campaign's most explicit case to date that McCain lacks the temperament to be president.

On the economy, McCain’s words and actions over the course of the past week have illuminated his lack of expertise.  He admitted he does not understand the economy -- his erratic, out-of-touch behavior this week, his failure to do anything of substance to move the agreement forward on the bailout, and his commitment to continuing Bush economic policies, demonstrate it.  But there are some questions we might see answered tonight after McCain’s misadventure to Washington and the phony ‘suspension’ of his campaign.  For example, will McCain finally say where he stands on the unworkable and counterproductive House Republican plan?  Will he be willing to buck his own party? [Emphasis added.]

It'll be interesting to see whether Obama goes there in the debate tonight. It's one thing to say McCain was wrong on Iraq; it's another to point out that, less than four months after 9/11, he was on a U.S. aircraft carrier in the Arabian sea yelling, "Next up, Baghdad!" Major Kong, anyone?

Ummm, not to beat a dead horse here, but Obama IS lifeless, aloof and windy in his debates. The man couldn't give a sound-bite answer to save his daughters' lives; every answer has a preamble, summary, and annotated bibliography. I don't think this is trying to lower expectations as much as Bill reminding all the Obamaniacs of exactly how Obama comes across to "normal" people.

Of course, I say this as one who likes the lifeless, aloof and windy answers because I think they exhibit real understanding of the issues, especially the nuances and gotchas that make the issues difficult to deal with. He has a propensity for actually answering the questions of the moderators  and interviewers as they are asked, without relying on key phrases and sentences which are recited verbatim and only sometimes actually associated meaningfully with the question that was asked.

Hah. funny, jacob.

The Obama people just have to be careful and not overplay this. I don't want any press releases talking about how he's known to eat live farm animals on stage or that he's prone to little bouts of laughter when talking about serious subjects. There's setting the bar TOO low.

Oh how I hate the game of "expectations management."

But even more, I hate the fact that the newsmedia buys into it, and so every time a Republican manages not to drop dead of an aneurism during a debate, he or she is declared the "winner" in terms of "beating expectations."

Hey, rhubarbs- if I recall correctly you're a Twins fan, right?  Congrats.  I am a ChiSox fan, and you guys just flat out-played us.  I know it isn't over, but...it is over.

Or is that lowering expectations???

No.

I don't think Obama cares that people think he's lifeless, aloof and windy (that is funny I have to admit).

He knows he can have 80,000 people weeping in the aisles if he feels like it.  He's comfortable with himself and is about to win as a black guy named Hussein by remaining 100% true to himself and utterly ignoring beltway advice.  I doubt that will change much now.  Maybe around the margins, but not much.  He may arch an eyebrow or two tonight, keep his lectures to half asleep level rather than full on falling asleep level hat tip Iggy ;).

He might even wag a finger or threaten to bomb someone.  But I doubt it.  And he'd look phony doing it.  Debates just aren't his thing.

Not that I care, I'm like GSpinks - the windier the better.

Besides, in terms of strategy: they have made it clear that they will use McCain's temperment against him. Its the sort of a jujitsu Obama has exceled at.  The more poised Obama is, the crazier McCain looks and becomes.  Its getting funny.  McCain reduces in age every day while Obama does the opposite.

What Wandrey said. I think L,A, & W might be the cozy, reassuring balm a panicky country wants, especially after witnessing Sarah Palin's soundbites-on-skipping-cd performance with Couric. That was like in the Stepford Wives movie [the original!] when someone stabs a robot wife in the gut, and the robot pulls it out and starts saying the same stuff but in the wrong order.

boneill, I think the Twinkie Nation should probably revoke my certification as a Twins fan. I sort of stopped following them last week, when they dropped a couple of key games and let the White Sox drift 2.5 games up with a week to play. "Screw it," says I, "they're done." And stopped even looking at the standings in the morning paper.

I should have know better. My dad, who was on the Twins radio broadcast team back in the day, used to have this habit of giving up on a losing game at exactly the moment when the Twins would find a way to turn it around. If the Twins were down, I used to wait anxiously for my dad's magic words -- sometimes even try to goad him into saying them -- "This game is over." Because I knew that the instant that dad would say those words, the Twins would start their comeback right then and there. It always worked.

So of course, I throw in the towel on the Twins entire season with much the same words over the breakfast table, and lo and behold, the Twins claw their way back into the lead. Which they totally don't deserve; they haven't played nearly as well this season as the White Sox. Who still have a good chance to win the pennant, you know, half a game back with four to play.

Well, Rhubs, we've both been actively attempting to hand this divison to the other guy.   "Here," the White Sox have been saying, "please have the division."  And the Twins, equally polite, have responded with "No no- we insist.  It is yours."  Before this week, when they said screw it, and knocked us silly.

I am pessimistic because I don't see us bouncing back.  I don't truck much with "momentum" or "contagious hitting" or stuff like that, but I imagine the life has been sucked out of the Sox.  And the Twins have KC, while we have an admittedly bad Cleveland team.

I will also point out that this might be the most civil discussion between a Sox and Twins fans in a decade.

Wandreycer1:  You may recall our exchange earlier in the week where we agreed that we'd be squirming throughout the debate. primarily because Obama is not adept at providing the kind of snappy, quick, and empty retorts that so equate with toughness.

Just want you to know that I'll be thinking of you tonight and will be interested to hear you take on the results tomorrow.

Let's keep the faith!

GSpinks:  You took they words right off my keyboard.  Thanks for saving me the arduous task of once again stating my convinctions.

Our country is facing a multitude of complex problems, none of which can be addressed with a quick, snappy, soundbite, or solution.   We need a president who understands this, who can view the nation's problems in a larger context, and who takes the time required to provide a thoughtful and intelligent response.  The fact that his tendency to think before he speaks and provide the reasoning behind his responses is viewed by many as a liability is  - at the very least - unfortunate.

I wish someone had told McCain in 2007 that when it comes to the presidency, bullshit artists need not apply.

At any rate, I look forward to hearing Obama debate tonight.  Call me crazy or naive, but I admire intelligence.
