Charlie Rangel's No Good Very Bad Year

First, he backed Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary (and paid for it by being denied a speaking role at the Democratic convention.) Then the NYT did an investigative report on his four rent-stabilized apartments. Then it was discovered that Rangel had failed to pay taxes on $75,000 of rental income from a villa he owns in the Dominican Republic. That led to a meeting with House Democratic leaders who pressured him to step down as the chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. And now Rangel's gone and called Sarah Palin "disabled," which has the flying monkeys all worked up. If Rangel had banked some good will with Obama by, say, endorsing him, I could see the Democrats rallying to his defense. But, since he didn't, I think things are going to get worse before they better for him.

OK, folks, the head of the committee that writes tax law is cheating on his taxes.  Yet, the Democrats are still discussing whether he ought to lose his chairmanship or not.

Is this just because he's a powerful Democrat who's been around a long time?  Or because he's a black guy who's a powerful Democrat who's been around a long time?

It is, given the Obama tax raising plan, and Biden's "patriots happily pay higher taxes" rhetoric, truly amazing.

I'm just surprised McCain is not exploiting this one bigtime.

I think it's Howard Dean that needs to step in here.

Republicans got slaughtered in 2006 because of Mark Foley and Jack Abramoff corruption scandals.  If you don't think the Republicans will pay back those attacks, you're a little niave.

Making it worse fo Rangel is his Big City image when Obama and the Democrats will be trying to win lots of rural votes in the Presidential & Senate Elections.

Rangel certainly should not be the chair of any committee, both as a matter of principle and a matter of good politics. Kick him out of that seat now, Democrats! It's not a bad thing to hold ourselves to a higher standard than the Republicans held themselves to in 2006.

I wonder if he is losing his mind, too. There are a lot of things one could say about Palin, but "disabled"?

Regarding the DR rental income, is the charge that Rangel failed to pay taxes owed or simply that he failed to declare the foreign income?  I'm a US citizen living abroad, and in my case the first $US 90K of foreign earned income is US tax exempt.  One does have to file however and declare the income on a special form.  It also may well be the case that the exemption applies only to Americans whose tax homes are abroad, in which case Charlie would owe tax on the foreign income.

Channy, Rangel supported Hillary to the bitter end, what makes you think that Obama wouldn't throw Rangel under the bus in an instant with zero regret making far bigger news? McCain is smart not to give Obama the chance, after all a black democrat going after another one will get the headlines and can give Obama a sister souljah moment. McCain going after Rangel is just politics as usual.

blackie, Nancy Pelosi runs the House, not Barack Obama.  And Speakers guard their prerogatives closely.

She's 3rd in line to be president, you know.  Someday, we could have women as the first two in line.

I guess I should say Pelosi is second in line to be prez.  The VP being first.
