Palin in Her Own Words

The Palin selection has created so much noise over these last few days that we thought it'd be a good idea to take a quick step back and run through some of her choicest statements. Here goes.

On Creationism vs. Evolution:

"Healthy debate is so important and it's so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both. And you know, I say this too as the daughter of a science teacher. Growing up with being so privileged and blessed to be given a lot of information on, on both sides of the subject--creationism and evolution. It's been a healthy foundation for me. But don't be afraid of information and let kids debate both sides."

 On the Iraq War:

"Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God. That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

On global warming:

"A changing environment will affect Alaska more than any other state, because of our location. I'm not one though who would attribute it to being man-made."

On the "bridge to nowhere":

QUESTION: Would you continue state funding for the proposed Knik Arm and Gravina Island bridges?

PALIN: Yes. I would like to see Alaska's infrastructure projects built sooner rather than later. The window is now--while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist.

On VP responsibilities:

"As for all that VP talk all the time, I tell ya I still can't answer that question until someone answers for me what exactly it is a VP does everyday?"

On secessionist-favoring Alaskan Independence Party

"Your party plays an important role in our state's politics...keep up the good work, and God bless you."

On "Troopergate":

"I've said all along, 'Hold me accountable. I'm telling the truth when I say, there was never pressure put upon Commissioner Monegan. I did not ask him to hire or fire anyone in the two years that we worked together. If it takes an investigation to prove that to Alaskans, then so be it, certainly."

Other than the first and third, I really don't see much to quibble with.

I think the wording on Iraq is a little clunky, but the sentiment is one that a large number of relgiious people (myself included) hold with regard to a wide range of policies. You don't have to agree with a specific course of action to pray that our leaders be granted Divine guidance and to ensure that things turn out for the best.

Of course an Alaskan politican would be in favor of the bridge. That doesn't mean that as a national office holder she wouldn't realign her priorities to be consistent with those of her new constiuency...

The VP quote is impossible to parse without context. (No audio on this computer...) But people say that sort of thing about the office all of the time, and I don't think it necessarily means she wouldn't take it seriously.

Only a minority of the AIP supports secession, and Palin could have been referring to other accomplishments. Or she could just have been pandering, which I also don't think is a huge knock against her.

If she was being honest (and, unitl the investigation is complete, we must assume she was...) what's wrong with the last quote? And if she is lying ...well then the scandal itself is far worse than the quote, so why worry about it.

Um scharch, the wording on Iraq, when read attentively, declares our involvement in Iraq to be essentially a crusade:

"Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God."

Now, you may agree that it's worth praying for the troops welfare, which I have no problem with.  But it's exceptionally naive to state that our soldiers are in the Middle East on a "task from God".  You either don't know or don't care how a statement like this can be perceived by Middle Eastern readers.  If the former, then, like Bush in the his administration, you're bound to be stupid in your choices regarding that region.  If the latter, then like Cheney, the choices you make will be reckless, making us look like more of an ass than we already do world wide.

Palin's choice of words here are awful.  And as Biden noted, she's VP material, so mistakes like this should be never be made by someone qualified for the position.
