Short-Lived McCain Veep Speculation

If you're following this story on the internet, it's pretty crazy. There's constant speculation, definitive-sounding leads, contenders ruled out, ruled back in, ruled out again, with darkhouse names coming in and out. The assumption is that the McCain camp is doing a great job of hiding a secret (and stepping on the Obama convention story.)

But maybe they really don't know who it is yet? (As of, say, 8:00 AM.) It sounds crazy, but hear me out. They had a definitive date for the announcement set out well in advance. But McCain's notoriously faction-laden team has been reportedly at odds over the veep pick. (Outside advisor Karl Rove even tried to go around McCain to subvert Lieberman, who is known to be McCain own preference.) We also know that McCain's decision making has a seat-of-the-pants style. And we know (per this Politico report) that the Biden choice, which was less than a week ago, scrambled the calculations for McCain.

So, maybe they really can't agree. Maybe there's still a last-minute back-and-forth. That would explain why more than one contender may (or, depending on what report you hear, may not) be in or on their way to Dayton now.

Crazy, I realize. But crazier things have happened.

it really seems that way. but obviously someone has to be there at noon--which is already pushed back an hour. unless they postpone till tonight or tomorrow, which I think would look awful.

should we be revisiting Portman?

In my gut I think it's Lieberman.

They're just trying to embiggen the story to distract from Obama's speech.

Lieberman does not pass the family values, pro-life criteria and vetting process established by a 3 times married, 3 times divorced, childless, drug dealing talk show radio host.

Now there's leadership we can believe in.

CNN is reporting that the McCain campaign leaked that it's not Pawlenty, and he's been told so.

A while ago I looked at intrade and 'Romney for VP' futures had plummeted from better that 60 to just 3.  I assumed there'd been an announcement and it wasn't Romney.  Now I looked back and 'Sarah Palin for VP' has gone from 4 to 90!  What gives?  I can't find any actual confirmation of anything.

Does anyone know enough about online predictions markets to tell me whether in cases where basically no one is interested in an issue--such as whether Sarah Palin will be the veep pick--one or two interested parties can run up the price?

Barnacle - I disagree.  Palin would represent the McCain campaign's realization that they're in a deep hole and need a "Hail Mary" to have any chance to win.  Putting a woman on the ticket would give the Hillaristas one more rationale to abandon their party's nominee.  Her selection would be a game-changer, maybe not enough to make the difference, but enough to throw Obama's campaign strategy into temporary disarray.  Maybe it's just a feint.  I hope so.

I have to think Palin is a headfake.  Could the Repubs be THAT crazy/desperate/stupid?  With Palin as McCain's running mate there goes his inexperience line of attack.  Isn't the FIRST requirement of a VP be that he/she is ready to assume the presidential mantel should, Gog forbid, the worst befall numero uno?  Shouldn't the veep's readiness be of particular concern when numero uno is a 72-year-old cancer survivor?

My God, I just looked Palin up on Wikipedia.  As of 1996 she was a city councilwoman in an Alaskan town so small I've never heard of it--and I worked in Alaska.  After that she was out of public office.  She lost her bid to become lieutenant gov in 2002 and only became governor in an upset primary win TWO YEARS AGO.  Any time--I mean ANY time--John McCain says that Barack Obama is too inexperienced to be CiC, he merely has to ask, "By what criteria, then, is Sarah Palin experienced enough to be CiC?  And if she's not experienced enough to be CiC, why did you tap her for the number 2 spot?  Is this another example of your vaunted judgment?"

Oy ... Disarray because the one potentially difficult criticism of Obama - his lack of experience - has just vanished into thin air?  Or because women are automatons who will vote with their vaginas rather than with their heads?  This is a gimmick, worth of Walter Mondale.  Now, if he had chosen Hutchison or Snowe or a woman of some intellectual and political heft, that's one thing.  But Palin?
