Sarah Palin and Buchanan

Eve notes Christopher Hayes's catch that Sarah Palin supported Pat Buchanan in 1999. Neither of them really dwells on the significance of this, so I wanted to back up for those who don't remember the circumstances of the time. This isn't like supporting Buchanan in the GOP primary. When Palin was supporting him, Buchanan was running as a third (actually, fourth) party insurgent, appealing to conservatives who thought George W. Bush was too moderate. This suggests that she's not just a run-of-the-mill movement conservative but a hard-core right-winger.

So will any questioner during the debate have the sense or courage to ask, "You are running  as VP on the Republican ticket this year.  Why did you support Pat Buchana's bid on a third party ticket against George Bush Sr. in 1999?"

Let's hope so.  Let the lobbying begin!

Does anyone else think this choice might hurt McCain by vaporizing his moderate credentials once and for all? I mean, aside from all the other reasons it hurts McCain.

What do Rev. Wright and William Ayers have to do with this?  Sen. Obama never supported either of them as fringe candidates for President, against his own party.

It's a totally different issue.

timteeter--this was against George W. Bush, our current (and beloved) president.  And she also supported him against, it seems, his chief primary rival, one John S. McCain III.  I hope the press is asking both the candidate and his newly minted veep nominee about this.

As I just wrote on the Stump, another post here says she was Steve Forbes's AK director in 2000.  Is that consistent with support for Buchanan that same election cycle?  Could she have supported both at different times?  Or is somebody mistaken?

She could have supported Forbes in the primary and Buchanan in the general. Pat did not run in the GOP primary in 2000; he just ran as an independent in the general.  (Remember how well he did in Palm Beach County!)  I would like to hear more about this.  (Psantillana--I assume you agree.)

Buchanan was a Republican, and running for the Republican nomination, until October 1999.  She probably endorsed him before he switched to seek the Reform Party nomination.

Obviously, she won't be putting forward Buchanan's America first, anti neocon, anti immigration, protectionist platform in this election.

one more thing:  Pat Buchanan rocks.

Does her support of Buchanan mean she may not U.S. interventionism as in the war in Iraq?

That's right.  (Not the part about Buchanan rocking.)  The question remains, however, who Palin supported in the 2000 general election; it would be rich if it were Buchanan (although giving him any support is frigthening).  He can be amusing as a commentator on TV, but as Molly Ivins said of his 1992 convention speech, "it sounded much better in the original German."

I firmly believe that most prominent Republicans are not racists or even homophobes. And almost no one in America is an anti-Semite. Buchanan is all three. Supporting him is completely indefensible.
