John McCain is going to run an ad! Tonight! And get this>! McCain's going to speak in the ad! Directly to Barack Obama! Stop the presses! The way the McCain campaign has played the media this week has been something to behold.

According to the Politico article, McCain will be performing a "strip-tease."

I choose to take that word literally.  Don't disappoint me now, John!

"Hello Barack, this is John McCain.  My apologies for implying that you are in any way unpatriotic.  We both love America and  and want what's best for our country.  My differences with you are on matters on policy and experience.  You may make a great president someday, but not this year.  I'm John McCain, and I approved this message."

This is actually really risky for McCain.  Having breached the tradition of shutting up during the other nominee's convention, McCain has given Obama permission to do the same next week -- which could essentially void any advantage McCain may have derived from going last.  Obama can now flood the news cycle with ads, events, or whatever, to effectively frame the Republican convention in as damaging a light as possible, without getting blowback for having breached etiquette.

Contrary to conventional wisdom, I think the Obama campaign's decision to avoid attacks on McCain this summer has set them up to toast him this fall.  If the Obama campaign had attacked, McCain would have been able to paint Obama as a hypocrite and just the same old type of politician in contrast with the myth of McCain's saintly character and nobility.  Instead, McCain was forced to go on the attack, in the sleaziest way possible, just to avoid getting shut out entirely.  It moved some polls, but it has also badly damaged the image of McCain as some "noble being".  That image is THE foundation of McCain's political career, and once brought into question, the whole structure can be brought down.  That McCain's own actions will be the root cause, and NOT a barage of negative attacks from Obama, will make the collapse all the more powerful AND effective.

Is anybody else hoping he says, "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya.  You killed my father. Prepare to die....electorally."

While entertaining, I would find this particular refrain from McCain to be Inconceivable!

In other news, I hear that McCain staffers are going to be at Mile High tonight directly in Obama's line of sight banging those Thunderstix things that you get at NBA games.
