About That Stage

Judging from See Swann's behind-the-scenes at Mile High video, I'm afraid that, contra Josh Marshall, Obama's backdrop gives off much more of a Temple of Delphi-vibe than a Lincoln Memorial-one.This might turn out to be the greatest stage screw up since Spinal Tap's Stonehenge set.

Update: Ben Smith points out that Bush spoke from a similarly-columned set at the 2004 GOP convention. Just so long as Obama doesn't wear a flight suit. . .

Yep, and the "O" on the bumper stickers actually stands for Oracle.

Don't know anonevent, but it certainly doesn't look like the Lincoln - the Reps and PUMAs are having a field day with this one.  I've no idea why this kind of theater was felt to be needed.  Stupid idea.

I'm pretty sure the temple at Delphi didn't have paned windows. Something about it shouts early 19th century Federal style. I'm thinking an old courthouse, or (for some reason) the monument at Lincoln's birthplace. In any case, I fail to see what's so wrong with it. Obama's stage management has been very good thus far; until I see it myself, I'll trust that his people know what they're doing.

Oh for GOD'S sake! Why do you let McCain psych you out so easily?!

The "Greek" look comes from the fact that the LED screens placed in between the columns (See Swann's video shows that they're not just at the ends, they're behind the podium too) are turned off, so the structure right now has a spartan feel, in both senses of the word. Now imagine switching on the screens and displaying, say, a litany of American flags, or even just solid red/white/blue backdrops. Presto! Not so Greek anymore, is it?

I'm getting really sick of nervous liberals wigging out over the slightest poke from the McCain camp. Get. A. Grip.

And this year's election for President of the United States of America, brought to you by...Architectural Digest!

Maybe Norm could whip up a balustrade. Home Depot might spring for a couple spots.

I know what it needs: "Queer Eye for the Paranoid Democratic Guy"!

Somewhere Henry Wallace is nodding and going, "They're worried about a goddamn backdrop. Well. Things are worse than I thought."

Next time the Democrats should just let the Chinese take care of the details. Everything will look great despite being completely faked on a microchip smaller than a decent-sized booger, the price is right and, besides, China will let them run a tab.

Meanwhile, I heard this morning that Spinal Tap's drummer just passed away. Can anyone confirm?

It is absolutely insane how many of you, including Jason, have let the McCain operatives get inside your heads and psyche you out.  A stage with columns is just an architectural cliche.  To say that someone who would accept a speech with columns as a backdrop thinks he's hot shit is to say that someone who would accept a speech with flags as a backdrop thinks he's qualified to be President or something.

I don't mean to belittle.  These buggers have gotten in my head from time to time as well.  That's what they're good at.  But let's try not to let them do this to us.  There's only one guy who for the last nineteen months seems to go about his merry way and do what he thinks is fitting regardless of how the other side thinks it will "look," and he won the Democratic nomination from the prohibitive favorite.

McCain will get at least two, maybe three or four great spots ridiculing Obama with his Grecian forumula.

Please thank the boy who designed it.

Perhaps they were trying to subliminally remind viewers of the famous motto of the temple of Delphi?

"Know thyself."
