Do we really want the guy who keeps saying that various things the United States and its allies don't like are "unacceptable" and "cannot go unanswered" despite the fact that his administration will in fact accept and will not in fact answer them talking even more with our allies? Who on his right mind would act on anything Dick Cheney says? The man's words are empty, and in as much as they reflect any actual likelihood of action by the U.S. government, the relationship is inverse. In that, if Dick Cheney says, for example, that the United States "will not accept" an Iranian nuclear weapon, any intelligent person within Shahab-3 range of Iran would start digging a bomb shelter right then and there.

Surely even the Bush administration realizes the very real harm that it does to send Dick Cheney out in the world to speak for the U.S. government.
