From the Geniuses That Brought You Alex's Mom

It looks like MoveOn has decided to throw around some of its weight in the North Carolina Senate race with this ad linking Liddy Dole to John McCain:

Of course, I'm not sure linking Dole to McCain will hurt her that much, since he currently leads in the polls in North Carolina. Wouldn't the smarter play have been to link her to Bush, who has a 38 percent approval (and a 48 percent disapproval) rating in the state?

P.S. If you want to see what a good anti-Dole ad looks like, check out this one from the DSCC:

Reason # 357 to hate MoveOn

Has anyone ever actually researched how effective Moveon's ads really are, especially ads that focus on issues rather than candidates? I just cannot think of a single issue they supported or opposed with an ad that came out to it's liking. I realize that some candidates it supports sometimes win, but how often is Moveon to thank for the outcome?

MoveOn was right on one issue, the issue where its name comes from: The waste of time and resources that the Republicans invested in the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

Since then, they've been one giant ass ache. Their track record is slightly lousier than that of fanatical supply-side/right-wing-bat-shit-crazy Club For Growth (another useless organization that gets a lot more press than it deserves).

I think John Stewart summed it up nicely:  "10 years of making even people who agree with you cringe".

All the more reason for everyone to order one of MoveOn.com's free Obama buttons. Every penny spent mailing buttons to people is a penny not spent on embarrassing TV ads.

When do these ads start?  I've been seeing anti-Dole ads for weeks now and they're quite devastating.  The thrust of the ads so far has been attacking Dole's ineffectiveness in her office.  What is peculiar is Dole isn't running any ads here in the Raleigh market.

I don't criticize grammar in reader's posts, often written quickly.

But a professional journalist ought to do better than:  "From the Geniuses That Brought You Alex's Mom"

It's the "Geniuses Who..."

I see this mistake in professional writing all the time, and it's annoying.  Along with the very common use of the singular when the plural is called for as in "...there's a lot of people..."

That last one is really ugly and I see it all the time.

As somebody in the advertising business, I can tell you that MoveOn's ads are all incredibly amateur both in strategy and execution.

Not to mention their risible puerility.

The MoveOn people are just not very bright.  Or, has nobody notice?
