The Hand of Chalabi?

That's what the New York Sun's Eli Lake says is behind Maliki's support for Obama's withdrawal timetable:

The matter was taken up at a meeting of Iraq's National Security Council on Thursday on the recommendation of Mr. Maliki, who had been advised by the Iraqi politician Ahmad Chalabi to express public support for the Obama withdrawal plan. Asked for a comment yesterday, Mr. Chalabi, an old hand at working the American political process to the advantage of Iraq, conveyed a statement via his Washington representative, Francis Brooke: "This is an honor I will not claim and a rumor I will not deny."

In the same article, Lake has surge architect Fred Kagan implying that Maliki is succumbing to Iranian pressure. There's no denying that liberals who once derided Maliki as a Bush administration stooge are now touting him as the authentic and sovereign voice of the Iraqi people; but conservatives are doing their own flip-flop as well.

The Hand of Chalabi?  NOOOOOO!!!!!  (runs for the hills)

"Mr Chalabi, the sun once again rose in the East today.  Did you have anything to do with it?"

"This is an honor I will not claim and a rumor I will not deny."

But seriously?  The New York Sun has the cojones to say that Chalabi has worked "the American political process to the advantage of Iraq?"  The only thing that this guy is adept at is working the American political process to the advantage of Ahmad Chalabi.  I don't think the lies he told American intelligence about Iraqi WMD and ties to Al Qaeda were to the advantage of Iraq.

Yeah, I'd noticed the sudden silence from James Kirchick about Obama "betraying" "Iraq's democratically elected government" lately. Any moment now, Jamie or his old-enough-to-shave pals at The Corner are going to start blogging about how Obama's withdrawal plan is "endorsed" by "Iranian puppets" in Baghdad.

Also, watch for conservatives to start pointing out that Iraqi "sovereignty" doesn't include a Third Amendment, so the United States is not obliged to respect any merely local government's request for our soldiers to vacate their territory.

Hmm. Wasn't Bush pal Chalibi accused of being an agent for Iran.? Yet he's still running around scott-free. If the Bushies can't apprehend Chalibi, how the hell are they ever going to capture bin Laden?

Truth is, Dubya never wanted bin Laden. He just had an erection for te guy who "tried to kikk his dad" and was a bad, bad, bad, man and made his father catch hell.  Well, exacting vengance (through the use of other people's children, of course) are certainly more important that trying to stop groups that want to bomb America.

Honestly?  I think convos complaining about Chalbi manipulating Obama and Iraq for a liberal/Iranian agenda would really be the perfect capstone to this depressingly dishonest decade.  I welcome their desperate, flailing gottedammerung.

Yeah, there's McCain's next ad - whether out of contempt, resentment, desperation or sheer honest-to-goodness Republican malice: "Iran wants the US out of Iraq, and Obama supports the Iranian plan for the evacuation of US forces.  A vote for Obama is a vote for Ahmadinejad."

Maliki? yeesh, what about Sistani? This has his tacit approval all over it as well. About the only thing that hasn't gone wrong for McCain during this trip is that Obama hasn't met Sistani.

As I said in another thread, it is inexplicable to me how what could have been a huge Republican talking point (the Iraqis are standing up like we said they would, now we can begin to stand down) now has become (the Iraqis are standing up, how dare they the ungrateful bastards).

I suppose it was inevitable, the use of Iran as an excuse to discredit the sovereign Iraqi government we were supposedly in favor of.  (Rhubarbs, stop giving those people ideas...)  What gets seriously scary is if this becomes the pretext for a military strike against Iran on or about, oh, say, October 30...
