A Metaphor Too Far, Ctd.

So, it turns out that Karl Rove's attempt to frame Barack Obama as a Lord of the Country Club yesterday was not an isolated barb. As far back as April, Rove was telling the Times of London:

You have probably seen this kind of guy at London parties, trailing ash from a fashionable cigarette into the carpet and making snide remarks about someone "being an abominable bore."

The good news, I suppose, is that since April Obama has evidently stopped dumping his ashes on the carpet and has acquired both a martini and a beautiful date. The bad news is that Rove clearly believes this tortured metaphor to be an evergreen suitable for extension to any elite-sounding gathering. Where will Obama be "the kind of guy you see" next? At a debutante ball? At Davos? Drinking $1000 Mint Juleps at the Kentucky Derby? Readers are invited to speculate in comments.

So he's gone from being Christopher Hitchens in April to being James Bond in June.

That's a pretty solid progression.

I don't know where Karl will see Obama next, but I think it is more fun to describe Rove:

"He's the kind of guy you've seen at Washington parties, repeating jokes and one-liners he's told a dozen times before, while standing against a wall, brushing the ashes of recently burned executive branch documents from his sleeve, and reminding everyone who walks by how fucking smart he used to be."

Clearly, what's needed is a Rove-attacks-Obama Madlib template.

"You know this guy.  He's the one you see at [large American or European city] [plural of an elite-sounding gathering].  He's got a [expensive cigarette brand] in one hand and a [wine type or non-tequila mixed drink] in the other, making [arrogant adjective] comments about someone being [snobbish insult]."

You guys are way off on Rove, here.  I don't often like to use the pithy aphorism "you're all a bunch of mouth-breathing fucktards" too often, but here I find it apropos.   See, Rove realized he made a mistake with the London thing, painting Obama as effete and continental.  He hunkered down, did a bunch of research into 80s movies, and came up with the new trope.  Think- Obama is rich, suave, with a babe and expensive drink at a country club.  Making horrible comments.  This isn't a liberal: Rove is trying to paint Obama as one of those insufferable young Republicans who always get their comeuppance in the movies.  He knows his brand is toxic.   So why not make Obama seem like a guy named Chad Carrington III.  McCain will be the slob here.  Rove isn't making Obama as an intellectual- he is the Omega.   It is a great plan- a double secret plan.

Nah.  Turb Blossom has a mancrush on Obama.  Either that, or else he's Smithers, daydreaming about how he would like to see Obama.  Mark my word: next time, it'll be "He's the guy who walks out of a wavy Ocean with nothing on but thongs and a sunny grin, plops himself on the sand underneath a mango tree, making catcalls at fat honky sunbunrt blobs who walk by ...".
