The Return of Patti Solis Doyle

The NYT reports that Patti Solis Doyle, last seen getting sacked by Hillary Clinton, has joined the Obama campaign and will serve as the chief of staff to his runningmate. The Times wonders whether this means "Mr. Obama is really considering Mrs. Clinton for the No. 2 position, and wants to have an ally of her in place to ease the way?" But when you consider that, as the Times reported in its big Clinton campaign post-mortem earlier this month, Clinton and Solis Doyle haven't spoken since she was sacked, the opposite seems just as likely.

Hillary would, if she was going to be the VP candidate, want to pick her own staff (and Solis Doyle certainly wouldn't be one of those picks), and she is likely not the only contender who would (i.e., a sitting Governor such as Richardson or Sebelius).  I think this may be meant as a signal (1) to Hillary that she is not seriously being considered and (2) to the other contenders that the Obama campaign is going to dictate not only what they do but who they work with, and they had better like it.

This hire just leaves me befuddled. If any of the stories are reasonably true out of the Cliinton drama, she is at best a lightweight, perhaps more culpable. This doesn't seem like Obama's style of hiring, unless there is 'diamond in the rough' characteristics not presented in the Clinton narrative (another Clinton mistake letting her go instead of someone else?)

Why would a VEEP want to come in with a chief of staff already picked out for him/her?  That seems unusual.

She has ties to Axelrod and she is from Chicago if I remember correctly.  Seems like a Chicago family hire, like alot of other centralizing moves.  I don't think they're dumb enough to intend this as an olive branch.  I think 'slap in the face'  is pretty rediculous as well.   She was good enough to get hired for the HRC job.  Didn't she have to show some competance to make that happen?  Funny how the nameless 'Clinton insiders' (there sure are alot of them) are using such different adjectives now.  Back then it was a 'Patty's decision'.   Now shes polarizing and responsible for all of the quarreling in the campaign.  Somebody might want get Mark Penn on the horn and let him know he's off the hook.  We've found the true iceberg that brought down the SS Hillary.

Is this a joke?

Who the f*** would want PSD running anything connected to his or her campaign?
