Extra crispy Crist

Let's forget the Dems' steelcage death match for a moment and turn our attention to something more serious: Florida Governor--and possible McCain runningmate--Charlie Crist's tan. Florida Democrats have made fun of it in the past, and Crist has cleverly countered by crying racism. As the then-state AG marveled to a radio host in 2006:

"It's sad. I mean, my goodness--because I happen to have Greek heritage and if I go out in the sun for a half hour and it looks like I've been out there for four hours because I have a darker complexion than somebody--honestly, Jim, I thought we were at the place in this country where the color of somebody's skin or the complexion that they have is not something that's an issue of political debate anymore. I've been fighting for civil rights for all of our people as attorney general, and for the Democratic party to kind of poke fun of something like that was really beneath a lot of Democrats that I know that don't feel that way."

Now, I got an up-close intro to Crist at the annual press-prom Saturday night, and, with all due respect to the guv's Mediterranean genes, that tan ain't the product of any half-hour in the sun. Crist's skin is baked. Dangerously baked. Damaged-beyond-its-years baked. Makes-Minority-Leader-Boehner-look-like-Conan-O'Brien baked.

So I'm wondering: How will Crist's megatan play on the national stage? I mean, voters in South Florida kind of expect their pols to look like they just came from some fun in the sun. But how about pasty factory workers in Detroit or Scranton? Will they be turned off by Crist's man-of-leisure look?

Yes. Yes. I realize American voters are far too substantive and serious-minded to let anything so shallow as a candidate's appearance significantly impact their views. I'm just saying.

(Then again, maybe I'm just bitter b/c it's once again cold and rainy in DC.)

Someone needs to tell Crist that judging someone on the color of their skin is bad because it's judging someone by a measure they can't do anything about.  If Crist decided to go all Blue Man Group on everyone and paint himself blue, he knows he couldn't complain if people didn't take him seriously.  Judging someone on their skin color is okay if it's something they've done to themselves and made themselves look ridiculous.  It's an easy distinction.

George Hamilton leads the National LIberation Front for People of Bronze Color, fighting for the rights of, and  against the prejudices towards the perpetually tanned..  Tanned people must constantly battle the stereotype that they are the idle rich.

And yes Michelle, I too am bitter about the change in the weater.  Sunny and high 80's on Saturday.  Once again, cold and rainy.

Add in all the rumors that Crist is a closeted gay man and the Republican evangelicals are going to have a conniption.

My building hasn't switched over to A/C yet, so I'll take this cool and wet weather with pleasure.  You summer fanatics should move south and let me enjoy my native city for the few weeks I have left before it becomes unbearably hot.

Crist has always had the deep tan, probably due more to time spent in the tanning salon than his Greek heritage (the Tampa Bay area has a large Greek population, as many will recall Anthony Quinn's famous movie set in Tarpon Springs).  I am a Democrat and have never voted for Crist, but I will be the first to say he has been a pleasant surprise, both as attorney general and as governor.  Unlike Jeb Bush, Crist is a Florida native and has a keener understanding of the complex issues facing Florida.  And not just the fragile environment.  Florida is facing a very difficult future.  The rapid population growth over the past 20 years has put enormous strains on all public services.  And many of those who moved to Florida require much in the way of public services, and not just older American who have moved to Florida.  With real estate tanked and the economy sinking and many Floridians migrating to other states in search of better opportunities, some areas of Florida may soon resemble a vast waseteland.  Jeb Bush seemed to take great delight in deriding Florida's public employees.  But not  Crist.  Whether because of his father's service (he is a St. Petersburg physician) or his own predilections, Crist understands and appreciates the role of public employees.  He is no flame thrower, is not a divisive figure, and would make a fine Vice President for either McCain or Obama (or Clinton)!

McCain can tell us until he's Blue Man Group in the face that he adopted Crist, but how do we really know he didn't sire Crist out of wedlock?

According to Wikipedia, Crist's pop is Greek but, like the handsome yet strangely humble williamyard, his Mom's Scots-Irish from Pennsylvania. This is all so Obama-esque.

Raylward, as a fellow Floridian, what would be so bad about 3 or 4 million of us decamping for parts unknown?  It would make this beautiful state better for those of us who will stay. 18 million is too darned many people.

hey butchie I will say the same thing I said to my Chinese students when they complained there were too many people in China. If you are so worried about it, there is the nearest roof, now go jump off it. Funny how the other people are too darned many, but certainly not you. ;-)

my wife, a brown-skinned immigrant, tried to get me to use a fake tan in a bottle for our wedding.  I objected.  Later, I looked like such a ghost in the wedding photos that it was the first lesson in marriage: the wife is always right.  If John McCain picks Crist for veep, then McCain has two choices: heavy makeup or brace himself for a long season of ghost jokes.

By the way Michelle, since you saw him in person, would you say Crist was darker than Obama?
