TMI from Meghan McCain & friends

Today's WaPo "Style" section has a profile of hipster McCain offspring Meghan that's highly amusing and at times dangerously candid. For instance:

She carries five pairs of shoes around with her and has, she says, "the biggest suitcase on the trail."

"He's nicknamed 'Mr. Lee,'" [friend Shannon] Bae says of that suitcase. "That's her Chinese manservant."

The 23-year-old McCain immediately assures the reporter that she "didn't create" the nickname and doesn't like it. Still, can you imagine what kind of furious shit storm would have arisen if Chelsea Clinton or a Bush twin had been toting similarly named luggage?

Meghan, "Chinese manservant" is not the prefered nomeneclature.

Well, she's pretty hot.  I think we can overlook it just this forty or fifty times.

But Mr. Lee is not a Chinese manservant. He's the handsomest sweetie that I ever did see. Kids today don't know nuthin. The correct name for your suitcase full of fashionable shoes is "Imelda." And "Cato" is what you call your Chinese manservant.

She seems like a genuinely nice girl. I think the WaPo article, while funny, is overly snide bordering inappropriate.

some friend. um...unless Meghan is heard saying it publicly I think we all should treat it as hearsay. I don't doubt she said it, but we all say things in private to our friends that we would never say publicly.

Well, it might not be a double standard, because the women involved may be using the phrase with differing levels of irony.

Mr. Lee? Chinese Manservant? Unless there is some recent pop-cultural reference I'm missing, that sounds a lot more like the kind of off-colour joke someone of an older generation might make.  Who among us under the age of 40 can think of an example of a chinese manservant? (OK, fine, Cato/Kato in the pink panther, but he wasn't in the most recent version and the last pink panther movie anyone remembers is from the 70s).

This sounds like the kind of joke someone a lot older might make. Now, who does Ms McCain know that's pretty old and that is close enough to her to make jokes about her suitcase? (I'll give you a hint -- bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb iran).

Wild speculation, but still ...

btw ... 5 pairs of shoes is considered unreasonable? If you're on the road for long stretches campaigning, that seems quite reasonable. Even a regular guy would likely have a pair of sneakers to work out in, a pair of dress shoes and a pair of casual shoes.

How do we know she's not helping her father bash the ChiComs? Isn't this what "national greatness" is all about?

Speaking as the adoring father of a twenty-something daughter (a rather articulate, witty, attractive, accomplished, and personable young woman, IISSM), I imagine that John McCain gets a huge energy blast from having his daughter campaign for him. I mean, having your kid go to bat for you, day in and day out--talk about a lift. McCain probably feels a good 20 years younger as a result.

The only downside would be the perfectly understandable desire to swiftly castrate any random slimeball along the trail who you think might be thinking of hitting on her. But such violent urges can be channeled inwardly and reaped of their energy, as well.

What we really need to know is whether one of Hilary's nephews has said anything embarrassing. That would be real NEWS!

At least the commenters all clearly think this is a silly topic -- one can only hope that TNR and the WaPo does as well.
