His Cheating Heart

Even as I marvel at the idiocy of public officials who get caught in sex-related scandals, I often feel a certain amount of pity/understanding, especially when the charges involve lying ala Bill Clinton or Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. I mean, if you're a married guy screwing around, you're already lying to your wife, to your kids, and even to yourself about what kind of man you are. With all that on the line, I can see how many guys would risk lying to investigators rather than have their elaborately constructed house of cards come crashing down.

But then I read something like this bit from today's USAToday piece on Kilpatrick (emphasis mine):

Kilpatrick went on television with his wife in late January and apologized for his conduct, he insists there was no cover-up and has blamed the news media for most of his problems. He accused the Free Press of illegally obtaining the text messages — which the newspaper denies — and accusing the media of conducting a public lynching. He said the text messages and the settlement agreement that concealed them should never have been made public.

He also said the text messages were private even though he signed a policy directive in June 2000 advising city employees that all electronic communications should be considered public.

So far, Kilpatrick has refused to step down, saying he is on a divinely inspired mission to help rebuild the city.

And I think, This guy really is both too arrogant and too stupid to hold office.

His approach to Detroit's problems is akin to Bush's approach to Iraq.

Come to think of it, Detroit's probably the best analogue that America has for Baghdad...

It's better Michelle.

The woman he was cheating with is his Best Friend's wife.  Now that family is divorced.  And a little aside here, she was a woman in power, as cheif-of-staff, and she was just as horny as Kwame.  So this does hit the women too.

Kwame's Mom & Dad divorced, so maybe the trauma of that event and the poor role models for him to look up to contrbuted to his situation.

On the other hand, maybe if we grew up and stopped trying to pretend that everyone's love/sex life conforms to a suburban family sitcom and being shocked, shocked when it doesn't . . .

"you're already lying to your wife, to your kids, and even to yourself about what kind of man you are". Yes he is lying to his wife and kids, but that is nowhere the same as lying to yourself. All men are pigs. If I act according to my base nature how is that a lie? Men are hardwired to cheat, to pretend otherwise is to lie about what men are. I choose not to cheat because I don't want to risk my marriage or subject my wife to any pain, but if it were socially acceptable to have a harem I would.

Hey, the Mayor of San Francisco did something similar.  He's not under indictment.

Get me the SF District Attorney.

Just to put all this in perspective:

Yes, Kwame Kilpatrick is a pig for cheating on his wife, for screwing his CoS, and for his stupid and piggish remarks vis-a-vis the steamy text messages and his arrogant messianic ramblings. He's also a pig for about a zillion other reasons I needn't go into (I'm a Detroiter, and I've met the man).

As chan has pointed out, men are pigs because we are, in fact, hardwired to stick it to anything with a pulse. As Harry replied when Sally objected that this category excluded the old, fat and ugly ones: "no, you pretty much wanna nail them, too." The whole history of the world can be boiled down to the male impulse to insert pole A into just about any available (or unavailable) slot B.

So yes. We are pigs.

But Kwame's piggishness goes beyond all that.

He's a much BIGGER pig than most men because this whole case actually grew out of his firing of two excellent Detroit Police Officers who were investigating circumstances surrounding a hooker party at the mayoral mansion. IOW, he fired two cops to cover up the fact that he was a dirty cheatin' whorin' poon-hound.

During the whistleblower lawsuit trial that followed, he was asked on the stand if he fired those cops. And lied.

He was asked if he was having an affair with his chief of staff. And lied.

He was asked if they sent steamy text messages to each other. And lied.

And when the trial went against him, he basically short-circuited his own appeal and made the city cough up millions to settle...in a vain attempt to prevent said text messages from becoming public.

Now...

THAT'S a pig.

IOW, he's a lock for re-election, right, sully?

(Separately, Doc - not to hijack the thread, but your sightings here are scarcer and scarcer so I'll ask: do you think McCain's lapses indicate he has a serious ailment-- no, seriously-- that we've not been told about?)

sullydog, I didn't say "men are pigs".  I just said that the mayor of San Francisco did essentially the same thing this guy did.

I think whether a sexual act is piggish or not depends on whom you do it with, under what circumstances.  And, basically whether you've got style, or no style.

Like Bill Clinton, these mayors are a little short in the style department.

I've been sequestered in my lab and my ER for the last few weeks, with barely enough time to eat or sleep. I haven't heard about the lapses, sorry. I've always thought McCain's age and physical condition would be an issue, though. If you point me at some relevant material I might be able to offer a more-or-less speculative and worthless opinion, though.... :^)
