Comedy

A couple of weeks ago, the comedian Sinbad, a Barack Obama supporter, took a swipe at Hillary Clinton, noting that he and Sheryl Crow were with her on the 1996 Bosnia trip she's been touting as a central element of her foreign policy experience, and claiming it was neither as important nor as harrowing as she's described it. Now, Clinton swiped back at Sinbad, pointing out that "He's a comedian, you know"--and, as such, presumably not someone to take too seriously.

I'll go even further than Clinton, noting that Sinbad is a bad comedian. But if we're not supposed to take Sinbad seriously, how seriously can we take a Bosnia "mission" in which he was one of the key participants? As Sinbad himself put it, "What kind of president would say, 'Hey, man, I can't go 'cause I might get shot so I'm going to send my wife...oh, and take a guitar player and a comedian with you.' "

(Bonus quote from contemperaneous coverage of the Bosnia visit: "Another soldier said he thought that it was all right for Mrs. Clinton to visit, but 'everyone really wants to see Sheryl Crow and Sinbad.' ")

Hey, if Yakov Smirnoff can become the Elvis of Branson, MO, the sky is the limit for Sinbad.  Not to mention, Al Franken's about to win the MN senate primary!

He was just part of the cargo, as was Crow.  He was a stage prop.  Orr and his fellow Obamaphiles never pass up the chance to make assinine points.

No jm,

Hillary was the stage prop.

I realize this is painful for you, but the reality of Hillary is simply ---- not much.

If Hillary is willing to place what was the equivalent of a Bob Hope-style USO show on her resume, she deserves all the ridicule she gets.

It was a joint forces operation and Sinbad represented the Navy contingent?

How droll.  Not every politician can make crowds swoon and faint like Obama.

Policy is soooo boring.

Innocent times indeed:  From the "contemperaneous coverage" cited above. March 26 1996:

"Today's visit came as some troops, living uncomfortably and often dangerously, continue to wonder about the value of their mission."

Total U.S casualties in Bosnia:  0.  When researching U.S. casualties in Bosnia, I came upon this gem from the Phyllis Shlafly Report, January 1996t:

"All the whining palaver we hear about "we must support the troops" is disingenuous and dangerous. The best way we can support our troops is to bring them home and save them from walking across foreign fields where four to eight million mines are concealed. A third of U.S. casualties in Vietnam were caused by mines, and the same can be expected in Bosnia. "

I'm glad that Operation Iraq Freedom was such a success, as measured by the fact that so many bad comedians that have gone there since 2003.

Laura Bush visited the troops in Afghanistan, and she'd visited 68 countries through 2006.

So, is Hillary padding her resume, or is Laura the second-most-qualified potential president in America? It's pretty much one or the other here, especially given Laura Bush's decade as a public servant before marrying George, compared to Hilary's mere seven years as a public servant after her husband's presidency.

Of course SNL skits should be taken very seriously, indeed even referenced in Presidential Debates!

This would be funny if it weren't so sad... In any event, Sinbad here is just a PERSON recalling what the trip was like.  If we can't trust him because he is a comedian, what does that say about Hillary?  She's a politician, you know.

Let's see, who do we trust to be more honest comedian's or politicians?  The question answers itself.

Sinbad may be just a comedian, but he's tested and ready to lead on Day One.

Actually, much of passes for commentary on the Plank should be part of a Saturday Night Live skit series: "Very Bad Political Posturing Theater For Children."

Speaking of comedy - I just received the March 12 edition of "Tiger Beat" a.k.a The New Republic.  "Why you Love HIm!"  "Meet His People"!

Why it was two weeks late, I don't know.  Maybe the 12 year old across the street swiped it from my mailbox.

It is only further evidence of their tone-deafness that they feel compelled to point out that Sinbad's a comedian. Obviously, that's the whole point -  the Bosnia trip is not something to be bragging about front and center if Sinbad was on it. They really should stay away from this "debate" because it's a loser any way you slice it. On its merits AND because it makes her look petty.

But also: wasn't Clinton trying to cite an SNL skit as authority for her claim of media bias?

roi, I'm no Hillaryphile, either.  I wish it weren't between these too.  It's just that this TNR Obamaphilia and Hillaryphobia are so inane... Maybe it's based on TNR's cool calculus, that Hillary's negatives are insurmountable and that Obama has an incrementally better chance against McCain.  So, they do what they have to do.  I dunno, maybe it's a Democratic year anyway and Kucinich could get elected.

Like I've said elsewhere, given the likely state of the economy by September, I am starting to believe that even Hillary could beat McCain, but Kucinich?  Not even in the Great Depression.
