Saying Good-Bye to Another '60s Symbol

This has absolutely nothing to do with the primaries, but I feel compelled to make mention of the fact that the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, father of the Transcendental Meditation technique, died yesterday. Or, as the related press release put it, his holiness "is welcomed with open arms into Heaven."

This guy always fascinated me. Born in Jabalpur, India (some time between 1911 and 1918, according to Wikipedia), he came to the U.S. in the late 1950s. A decade later, he emerged as a symbol of the '60s counter-culture as spiritual guru to a variety of pop stars, including, most notably, The Beatles. Then, after bumping around SoCal for several years, he set up a sprawling, full-fledged, PhD-issuing, vaguely TM-related university (now known as the Maharishi University of Management) whose students all practice TM daily and whose mottos is: "Engaging the Managing Intelligence of Nature." And he did it in Fairfield, Iowa, of all places.

Hmmm. Iowa. Maybe this does have a link to the primary season after all.

I started TM in the early '70s and did it off and on for years thereafter.  It's very relaxing, especially when done regularly. Very good way to chill out. I would do it now except I think I'm more at home in my mildly ADHD, proto-Alzheimer's mindset at the moment.

Transcendence? I never got around to that part of it. I have enough on my plate as it is.

One of TM's dirty little secrets concerns an annoying interruption that occurs in some practitioners. You meditate sitting up, and many folks like to do so in the nude. All well and good, except that when you're zoned out you get seriously relaxed, as in slack-jawed.

The mouth fills with saliva to overflowing until a large glob of drool plummets down to splash on your genitalia.  Kinda wrecks the mood.

So, kids, if you're gonna try this at home, don't forget to drape a hand towel, rag, dirty sock or what not over your crotch after you've settled in and before you crank up the ol' mantra.

And, Michelle, to add a wrinkle to the story and a tangential connection to the primary season - Fairfield, Iowa, is the seat of Jefferson County, an otherwise unremarkable place - which was the only county in the state won by Ron Paul!
