Republican Historical Amnesia

The final question at the GOP debate tonight asked the candidates whether they believe Ronald Reagan would have endorsed them. Within the span of four minutes, they told the audience that Ronald Reagan wouldn't have supported a candidate who changed his position on key Republican issues, wouldn't have supported amnesty for illegal immigrants, would have reduced the size of government, and would have reverted to the gold standard. The jury's out on whether these men are qualified to be president, but they sure aren't qualified to teach eleventh grade American history.

I can see why Talk Radio hates Huckabee. He's calm, very bright, clearly a fair-minded person, something of a populist, quite authentic...it's amazing he survives in a party that is dominated by the likes of Limbaugh, Ailes, Hannity, Bush, Cheney, Gingrich...the list seems endless. If McCain is the nominee, I think he'd be smart to pick Huckabee as his running mate. The more people see of Huckabee, the more they'll like him. And he'd bring out the Evangelicals, a lot of the South, the Wal-Mart crowd, the pro-life crowd - he's the "Main St." candidate that would cause major problems for the Democrats.

I highly doubt there's an 11th-grade American History class that gets to the Reagan Administration.  I highly doubt there's an 11th-grade American History class that gets to the NIXON Administration.

Hey!  My 11th Grade American History class got to the Reagan Administration.  In fact, I helped teach it (make little comments in back of the class long enough, and the teacher makes you put up or shut up).

Crock, you're in the 11th grade?  Jesus Christ on a cracker, when I was in the 11th grade I was still struggling with tying my own shoes, much less reading The New Republic.

No, I went through 11th Grade 5 years ago, but I was reading TNR then, back when you could keep shuffling e-mail addresses to get those free four weeks (after a few months, I knuckled unedr and actually bought the online subscription).

So, we're talking about the candidates' historical amnesia... what about Reagan's?  Is it not possible that in his final years, struggling with Alzheimer's, he made some wacky  statements like: "Nancy, I never would have supported someone who would give amnesty to illegal immigrants!"

Interesting that even Paul sought the Reagan mantle...as if to say to McCain and Romney (whose "turning to listen" expressions reek of condescension, disbelief, and in McCain's case, a barely repressed desire to snap the speaker's neck) hey, I'm a Republican too!

For what it's worth, my 11th grade class did get to Reagan, but my teacher described Iran-contra as Reagan trading guns for drugs from Colombia or some such confusion. True story. Maybe we should've sticked to the Boston Tea Party after all.

(And Crock, I too remember the days of shuffling e-mail addresses...I never knuckled under till now though; most exciting primary season in decades will do that to you)

We covered Reagan in my junior year of high school too.  Not because it was on the curriculum, but because our teacher was a complete right-wing lunatic.  Oliver North was "a hero."  FDR, a "communist."  Fun times.
